Over run on radiator fans is normally caused by a stuck relay, but if the fan eventually goes off, then the relay is working, otherwise it would keep running until the battery dies. there may be a timer in the relay to allow the fan to "run on", so as to not only cool the rad, but also to cool the engine bay, where the heat will well up. If a new stat was put in, it could be that the stat is stuck, and one side of the system is cold the other hot. check the inlet and outlet hoses on the rad, if the temprature diffference is extreme, then the sat may be stuck closed, or install backwards. Air is a poor onductor of heat compared to water, so unless there is an airlock in the system which will be evident from the differing heat areas of inlet outlet, the only other suggestion is to check that the water pump is working. it may have failed, or be clogged.

Hope thtas help.

SOURCE: We just got back from a five hour trip, shut the

I have a 2001 S60 and the thermo fans come on after nearly every trip for at least 5 minutes, I would check your coolant levels and certainly change the thermostat if the problem persists.

When I turn the engine off the engine cooling fan stays on and does not shut off

depending on the engine temperature the fan is supposed to remain on after you turn the engine off, until the engine reaches a preset cooler temperature. when it reaches cooler temperature usually within 5 minutes or so it should cut off... if you cut it off and it is running 30 minutes later.. then there is a problem with the fan relay or temperature sending unit.

Car fan won't turn off

Is it over heated? It is normal for an overheated vehicle to keep the fans on to cool down for a little while. If they dont shut down after a few mins, then check the wiring for any shortage.
I hope this helps!

Hey chandralebea,

Try first by replacing the cooling fan engine temp sensor switch, as this may be the cause.

Why does my radiator cooling fan remain on after I turn off the ignition?

The car has a computer that is linked to the engine. It is hard wired to it meaning the computer is always on. Upon shutting your engine off taking the keys in hand the computer is still on sensing the engines temperture. The coolant sensor will send power to the relay to keep the fans running untill cooled down enough. Then the sensor will cut off power to the relay shutting off the fans

Hello, what does it mean when the fan is still running after the car has been turned off. it's still running after 1 hour

Most electric fan will run after car is shut off when it is hot, to cool the coolant. They shouldn't run for more that 15 min tops. It sound like a timer is malfunctioning.
hope that helps

The fan won't shut off after turning off the car. Takes About 12 minutes it will finally turn off. 2000 VW golf.....2.0 ltr VW replaced the ''module'' but that did not solve the problem. The VW dealership...

That fan is to cool the engine. It is normal for it to continue to cool after the enging is shut off and operates much longer in hot weather than in cold weather. If you think it is cooling to long before shutting off I would check the cooling system to see that it is operating correctly. If no and the engine is overheating somewhat that is why the fan runs longer.
