After sitting overnight, car takes 30 seconds of cranking to start. After this, it starts right up unless it sits for 8 or more hours. Why?

Unlikely time is a factor here, unless heat plays a role.
You probably have a Dirty Gas Filter or Bad Fuel Pump

Sounds like you have a bleed back problem, check for leaks or bad orings on the fuel pressure return lines.

My 2003 jeep grand cherokee will start fine after it sits overnight or for a hour or so but won t start if i go to the store and get in it five minutes later. After 1 hour it cranks right up

Sounds like a fuel mixture issue, being a 2003 must be EFI, could be faulty mass air flow sensor, fuel mixtures being to rich when engine is at operating temp.

If my jag has been sitting for more than 24 hours the first time I try to start the engine takes maybe 8 or 9 cranks before it will start, after this she starts quickly.

Sounds like the engine oil is quite thick when cold so you probably need to check the last time the oil was changed along with the filter.once it gets slightly warm the engine takes less cranking amps to turn over so it will start quicker.

My 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.2L is very difficult to start if it has not been run in the previous 6 hours. Replaced ignition coil but didn't solve the problem. After sitting overnight it

Low fuel pressure.
You need to check the fuel pressure on the first crank and watch it as it is running.
Requires a special gauge.
If it were just a starting problem I would say it could be a pump relay, but not if it runs rough for 5 min.
Might be a dirty filter or problem in the tank.

Car won't stay running after sits overnight and runs good after you do get it started

In the morning, turn key to on position for 5 seconds. Do not crank. Then turn off for 5 seconds. Repeat this about 5 times. Then try to start. If engine starts right up, the fuel pump check valve is bad. Meaning all fuel in fuel line is returning to the tank when car sits overnight. The only fix is to replace fuel pump. If that doesn't work, replace coolant temp. sensor for the computer. About a 12.00 part.

Hard starting after sitting awhile

My 98 Jimmy runs on synthetic oil and starts well after sitting in cold weather. If the weather is the problem, try checking that. If it is warm... sorry no ideas.

Long cold cranking before start

You have a very common problem; your fuel pump needs replaced. Inside the outlet of the fuel pump is a "check valve", that holds fuel pressure from draining back to the tank. What you have happening is the fuel has emptied from the lines and the injector rail; the long cranking period is the time that it takes for the fuel to be pumped back to the engine. Replace the fuel pump & your problem will go away.
