Question about 2003 Ford Expedition

1 Answer

How do I locate the MAS in a 4.6L 2003 Ford Expedition. Need to spray cleaner on it but not sure where to find it.Can't locate a exploded diagram of the engine to aid in locating. I know it is in the air intake but when i look under the hood it looks like a space ship instead of a car.

The mas (mass air sensor) is located between the air filter housing and the throttle body housing

Testimonial: "Turns out my problem was not the MAS but a vacuum hose from the PCV that leaked. But the location of the MAS was useful "

Admission code PO174

There are many causes for this code.First i would get a can of carb cleaner and spray around all of the vacuum hoses and intake manifold and look for a vacuum leak. Make sure to inspect the PVC hose for burns or melting. If ther is no leaks then i would take the mass air flow sensor off and clean it with a non-chlronated brake cleaner and let dry for 15 minures then re-install.

Multiple cylinder misfire, codes P0354, P0356, P0357, P0361

clean the MAF, Mas Air Flow Sensor in the air intake tube first. Use carb cleaner or MAF cleaner. Do not touch the 2 sensor wires that you spray. delicate!!

ALso, put a bottle of Chevron Techron Fuel injector cleaner in the fuel tank, 1/4 tank or less.

Try that first. Also, replace spark plugs, put antiseize on the threads. Last resort is to replace the COPS, Coil on plug for each offending cylinder.

Misfire Definition: A misfiring cylinder is lacking power relative to the other cylinders. The causes for a cylinder specific misfire could be fuel, spark, or mechanical problems. Perform a thorough visual inspection. If no visible concerns are found use the following WDS tools for misfire diagnosis:
  • Self-test (Check for codes first)
  • Power Balance (Identify the cylinder of concern)
  • Relative Compression (Rule out a possible mechanical issue)
  • Fuel (Make sure fuel injectors are not restricted) (plugged)
  • Ignition (Make sure spark plugs and coils are working properly)
  • Oscilloscope (Detailed signal analysis)

99 expedition running lean and dying when at idle

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Look for obvious vacuum hoses broken, squished or off. Check at egr valve, dpfe sensor & solenoid. These are all common to go bad. If not obvious take carb cleaner with snorkel attached, spray intake manifold & hoses etc. If idle raises while spraying you located vacuum leak. The propelent in the can temporarily seals leak while its being sprayed. Be careful not to spray on wires or anywhere there is a spark.

DTC P0506 is idle speed too low. You most likely have a sticking IAC motor(pretty common with that truck). You can try tapping it with a soft hammer to free it up temporarily but it should be replaced.

You can also try to clean it out with throttle body cleaner, follow the instructions on the can and make sure you spray the cleaner through the IAC passage way in the throttle body, 85% of the time this will fix the issue and you'll not have to replace the IAC. If it's too dirty, then your going to have to replace it and the IAC is located on top of the throttle body.
Thank you for using Fixya and good luck

I have a 2003 Ford Expedition XLT 4.6L 2WD Auto used an OMDII scanner to diagnose problems. The DTC's that came up were the following: P2195 (Sensor Stuck Lean), P2197 (Sensor Stuck Lean), P0171 (System to...

Sounds to me like you have an intake gasket or a vac line leaking. Get a can of brake cleaner or starting fluid (brake cleaner is preferred) and spray it around the engine with it running at idle and listen for the engine to rev up. if you spray is near the intake and it revs up, time for new gaskets. If you spray it away from the intake, near a line or something, and it revs, start looking around there for a broken line. if you fined one, it can be easily repaired with a 2 inch section of rubber tubing about the same diameter. just slip the line into the tubing and it should work just fine.
