Question about Volkswagen Beetle

Open Question

My 1973 vw air cooled engine coughs through the carburetor and won't idle . I'm not sure if i have the plug wires 1432 in the right direction. (clockwise or counter-clockwise) ? I have replaced the coil, points, cap, rotorcondenser and plug wires. NO matter what ni do the result is the same. It coughs then starts, runs rough then dies. I have adjusted the two screws on the left siode of the carburetor ( volume and idle) nothing helps!

SOURCE: 1998 dodge ram pickup 318 eng.

If the engine seems to run fine over 1450 RPM maybe there is a vacuum hose leaking or EGR valve is slightly stuck open. Any help from the OBD II trouble codes? Or is there simply no MIL and no stored information in the OBD II computer read at the local parts store through the connector by the drivers knee?

SOURCE: 2004 GMC Denali speedometer needle stops

All Chevy and GMC trucks (pick-ups, Tahoes, Yukons, Suburbans etc.) during the years 2002-2004 had issues with the IPC (instrument panel clusters). The would be erratic, and sometimes stick at a certain speed and not move, or occasionally work then stop at a speed, then jump to the next speed. It is a common problem. Unfortunately the only fix is to replace the IPC, and have it reprogrammed at a dealership, or repair facility capable of programming. The IPC is actually a module, and communicates on the data line with other computers. The mileage will also need to be reprogrammed into the new IPC.

SOURCE: car starts running rough at idle, eventually quits running. Has new plugs, wires, cap, fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter, IAC Valve, and gas cap.

Back then, Honda suggested timing belt replacement every 60,000 miles. If your Honda has that much mileage or more and has never had the belt replaced, now may be the time.

Why would a VW air cooled engine backfire while idling.

Check the point gap, file ,clean and adjust.Point/ condenser, New cap and rotor, wires and plugs , all for good spark. Unburnt fuel igniting is a backfire, Tune up vehicle and if that doesn't work, then you need to check valve lash.

1998 vw passat v6 wouldn't kick over. Diagnostic tool pointed to camshaft sensor. Replaced it and mechanic tested electrics and replaced plugs. Battery was going flat so used jumper leads and still no go....

It's possible it may be that your timing belt slipped I have replaced a couple in VW's when they get older this may be why you received the code for the camshaft sensor as they are really working together only way to tell is to look at position of your rotor in the distributor to see if it is lined up exactly on the firing order if it is the belt its a very time consuming job and does take some mechanical knowledge it is not really a job for a novice and if it is the belt you will see that there are several to choose from do not buy the cheapest belt as you will have the same problem very quickly as they tend to stretch more than the better belts you don't have to buy VW parts but a name brand also you may have the firing order wrong on the plugs if everything was replaced check to see your firing order and match it up with the wires to the right cylinders

2004 VW new Beetle A/C won't cool. When turning on compressor it doesn't quite load the engine down any. It was cooling but only sitting still. Once I started driving the air got warmer and

speed up engine with air on and see if compressor turns off. if it does then it is low pressure. if it has electric radiator fans they should be on when the ac is on. if they dont work then it will make the pressure higher

I have a 98 vw bug 5 sp when i slow down it idles to low and the rpms drop and it cuts off.

Since VW's are especially sensitive to minor problems I would start by checking for vacuum leaks and bare wires in the engine compartment. Use a spray can of carb cleaner to spray along each vacuum line. If the engine revs up there is a leak in that line. Replace it. Make sure you check the joints too.

When you are inspecting the wires pay close attention to the plug-ins. Quite often on VW's the wire will start to break off at the plug-in. These will need to be replaced.A trip to a scrap yard will probably be your cheapest source for these but make sure the replacements have the same shape so they will fit.

If your engine has a similar set-up as the older CIS-M for fuel delivery you need to inspect your air intake for cracks or holes. With CIS the "throttle body" actually measured air flow and sent signals to the fuel distributor mounted at the air box. If air is able to enter the system "after" the fuel delivery, this would create similar problems.Temporarily repair the air leaks and head for the scrap yard.

If the problem persists I would check out "". Go into the technical section and use your engine as your guide, for example 16V,for your search. It has a search function but you need to be somewhat vague, engine dies, or low idle, engine cuts out. Most engine problems are drivetrain specific as opposed to vehicle specific. Hope this helps.

89chevy truck runs roughly

Isn't it fuel injected? More likely:
Pull plug wires one at a time, the one that has no effect isn't firing. Bad plug or wire.
