Question about 1987 Volkswagen Cabriolet

1 Answer

My 87 Cabriolet doesn't want to start (but it will pop-start). It also stalls a lot; it seems to have something to do with whatever it is under the back seat (fuel relay?), which starts to hum as the engine heats up. What do I have to do to fix this problem?

If you car wont crank start I dont think the fuel system is the culprit.

You probably have a sensor issue that starting the vehicle in motion overcomes.

You should see about having the engines diagnostic codes read and see if any sensors are out of range or stuck.

It sounds like an idle air control valve or throttle position sensor has gone bad *(perhaps both?)

Be safe and good luck!

Car starts fine..Idle is fast...stalls after car warms up

Check for vacuum leaks. Also try cleaning the ISV.

I have an 87 VW Cabriolet that totally stalled out on me and smoke that smelled like gunpowder was coming from under the dash. Sounded like the car was not getting fuel. I replaced the #5 circuit...which...

Sounds like you have a positive wire grounding out on your vehicle.  Look around under the dash for any tell tell signs of arcing to ensure you do not have a bare wire somewhere.

As far as the Fuel pump and relay...what I do is jump the fat, flat, wide terminals where you unplug the relay with a fused jumper wire. ( basically a wire the has 2 male blade connectors on each end with a fuseable link in-line betweem them)

With your battery connected and the key off you should hear a loud humming or buzzing sound when you jump those wide terminals in the #2 slot of your fuse box.
If you get the noise, it's the relay, if no noise, make sure you are jumping the correct terminals and assume the pump is bad.  $100 repair either way if you go the the auto parts store.
Hope this helps!
