Question about 2003 Saturn VUE

1 Answer

I have a 2003 Saturn Vue auto 4 cylind. 2.2 vti transmission and it had 103,000 miles on it. the transmission was replaced by saturn a year ago and we have had NO problems with it till now. We were driving along and it would accelerate 200 rpms all by itsself. It continually do this randomly for about a half hour until it wouldn't accel over 25mph. I have had transmission go out before and this is not that. wE had it towed to our house and now it will drive fine up and down our road.... haven't driven it over 2 miles since towing.. any ideas??? could some kind of sensor be messig up telling the computer board to accel???

    we were driving @ 65 mph and the rpms would jump from 2000 to 2200 without my husband pushing gas pedal. only change oil light but its incorrect we just have to have the light reset bc after it came on i had the oil changed... after a littl ewhile of it acting up we were sitting at a stop light and tried to go when it turned green and you could put the pedal to the floor and it would barely go. but after sitting awhile it will drive fine... then after it runs awhile- back to the monkey business

This could be a lot of things. Have any engine lights came on. Also what do you mean accelerate by 200 rpms? the idle would fluctuate or what? Once I have more information I can assist you further.
Thank you,

    Being that this is a CVT tranny known to have a lot of problems it could still be this. Also there is a service bulletin for the body wiring harness, then can cause reduced power problem. If you'd like I can e-mail you the pdf, or put it up on a hosting site for download. Also it could easily be a problem with the Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) System. This works differently then a conventional system as it is electronically controlled, and a problem in it can produce the same problem your having where it won't accelerate. The PDF explains it in a lot more detail, here is an excerpt:
    Reduced Engine Power Mode
    When the ECM detects a condition with the TAC system, the ECM may enter a reduced engine power
    mode. Reduced engine power may cause one or more of the following conditions:
     Acceleration limiting--The ECM will continue to use the accelerator pedal for throttle control;
    however, the vehicle acceleration is limited.
     Limited throttle mode--The ECM will continue to use the accelerator pedal for throttle control;
    however, the maximum throttle opening is limited.
     Throttle default mode--The ECM will turn off the throttle actuator motor and the throttle will
    return to the spring loaded default position.
     Forced idle mode--The ECM will perform the following actions:
     Limit engine speed to idle by positioning the throttle position, or by controlling the fuel and
    spark if the throttle is turned off.
     Ignore the accelerator pedal input.
    If you have any other questions let me know.
    Thank you,

I am looking to buy a 03 saturn vue from a local dealership and I have heard about all the problems with the VTI transmission. I would like to know how I could tell if it has a VTI transmission or not....

I have had 4 saturns. every unhappy saturn owner i ever met, and that was lots of them, always had automatic transmissions. every happy saturn owner i knew, including me, always had manual transmissions. given that there are no more dealers, and no more experienced saturn mechanics; if you can, do yourself a favor and get a manual. I passed off my last saturn to a girlfriend and let me tell you when you take one to a GM dealer they look at it as though it were a spaceship.

2nd, 4th, and reverse went out in my saturn, now stuck in 3rd, burning plastic smell?!?!?!

Your Vue could have several engine/trans configs; the GM 4-cylinder with 4 speed trans or VTi variable trans; all 2004-2007 V6 Vues' used a Honda drivetrain with very little issues. There were countless problems the the VTi transmission- my guess would be that's what you have and there were several recalls reguarding those issues; I would check with a dealer quickly...

How do I repair a problem with the code p0742?

Hey marcarhernan

This code is set when there is a variance in speed from the transmission input and output shafts. It can be a simple sensor issue or a more complex internal problem. There are several recalls for VUE transmissions but I do not think yours falls under this problem. Yours sounds more like an internal belt issue which Saturn has a technical bulletin for as shown below. This usually requires replacement of the case cover and filter and sometimes the belt depending on the damage. This is the bulletin that has to do with your code;

Bulletin No.: 04-07-30-024E
Date: June 09, 2006
No Movement in Drive or Reverse with or without DTC P0741, P0742, P0841, P1756, P1758, or P1882 (Replace Case Cover Assembly and Filter) Models:
2002 Saturn VUE - Retrofitted with a 2003 or 2004 VT25E (VTi) transaxle (RPO M16/M75)
2003-2004 Saturn ION
2003-2005 Saturn VUE
with VT25E (VTi) transaxle (RPO M16/M75)
This bulletin is being revised to add additional Correction information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 04-07-30-024D (Section 07 - Transmission/Transaxle).
Some customers may comment on the vehicle not moving in the "D" (Drive) or "R" (Reverse) gear selection positions. In many cases, the transaxle will also produce an audible grind or whine noise when attempting to operate in drive or reverse. The Service Engine Soon (SES) telltale may be illuminated with DTCs P0741, P0742, P0841, P1756, P1758, or P1882 set.
This condition may occur when the VT25E transaxle belt has malfunctioned.

Transmission 2003 saturn vue 4cyh cvt trans

If you are below 100 psi then you have a major leak inside the transmission. These will read upwards of 700 psi and require a special gauge to check line pressure. As far as fixing this there are limited parts available for this transmission and a replacement unit is big bucks. Take the car to your saturn dealer and see what they will do. These have a 5 year 75,000 miles warranty for the transmission, and most of them are covering up to and past 100,000 miles for customer satisfaction. If you dont know much or anything about this transmission do not attempt to repair it. Let the trained professional tech at saturn take care of this.
