I didn't think you could open a passat's transmission area to service it or even top up transmission fluid.
Is this expensive to get done?

  • colinbowen May 04, 2010

Thanks for the info. I guess I need to just pay for it and get it done!

As I said it would be great to be able to add transmission cleaner to it, but there is no way to add fluid without dismantling the car!!!!

The gearbox must be serviced: the oil is burned and aged and the filter clogged - replace both.

It's a shop job and it will be expensive - at least 3 hours of labour are needed.

I have a problem with my golf 4 gti 1.8t....when it's cold it doesn't change gears I always have to wait and warm it up.... Once it's hot it will change the gears normal.

Hello Bongs,

Not an uncommon complaint...varied VW models (and German cars in general) are known to be hard to shift when cold.

Less-than-stellar 1-2 syncros? Zero tolerance build specs?

Some people have reported double clutching helps..some have suggested moly additives..others have suggested changing the gear oil to synthetic. Give your local VW dealer a call and inquire about any additives they recommend for your hard shifting GTi.

THE TIPTRONIC SHIFTER DOES NOT FUNCTION,........REGULAR AUTOMATIC OK

I have the same problem with my 2003 Passat TDI. There is a magnet in the gear selector to engage and disengage the manual shift. I live in Thailand and am waiting on the VW dealer to locate one. If you are a little bit hands on you could possibly do the repair yourself. the replacement part is the plastic that slides up and down when you select your AUTO gears and of course to pull to the gate to engage manual shift. The magnet is part of that plastic replacement part. Cost 2000 baht which is about 42 English pounds. Good Luck

Ok, have your coolind system backflushed. Your heater core could be clogged. This could have been caused in using the wrong antifreeze system or mixing the green with the vw g-12 antifreeze. This could ran you about $110 to 150 dollars at a radiator shop...stay away from the Jidffy lube or oil doctor's . This could be your cheaper alternative to solution to your problem..good luck..

1996 VW Passat GLS transmission shift problem

Like to make sure that your post says your car is a 1996 with only 38800 miles.
There were many recalls for your vehicle back then which may be the cause of your hard shifting. Are you the original owner ? If so, have you done any scheduled maintenance to it from the day you purchased it ?
