My power steering goes out on my 2006 Saturn Ion, once I shut the car off it resets the power steering and I may be able to drive for sometime before it goes out again and then other times it may go out right away.

2006 ION. Why doesn't it crank or start?

It has electric power steering and there is a fault with it. The ECM recognises this and won't left you drive it.

There was a recall on it.

Only 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Maxx, and Pontiac G6 models built between April and June 2006 are included in this recall. As with the initial recall-which included the Saturn Ion, Saturn Aura, Chevy HHR, and Chevy Cobalt-the electric power steering (EPS) in these vehicles can fail at any time while driving.Feb 17, 2015

Where is the power steering stick in a 2006 saturn ion

This car has electric power steering. To diagnose you need a GM Tech2 scanner or equivalent to read the codes.

Power steering goes out on saturn ion quite often. can reset by turning off and on again. worried it may totally go one day

This is actually a problem that Saturn is aware of. Instead of issuing a recall, however, they put a 10 year 100,000 mile addendum on the warranty for the power steering column. If your car is still under the 100K mark, make an appt. and get it fixed asap, because you're SOL once it goes over that mileage. I, btw, had mine replaced two weeks ago for free. Over 100K, it's a 1200 dollar repair.
Pretty sleezey way for Saturn to handle the problem if you ask me...

2006 Saturn ION, Pwr steering light came on then the odometer quit working, then the engine light came on, the transmission would then not down shift while driving. All happened at the same time.

its possible that there is an electrical short circuit to ground on your steering system, check your fuses and relays to see if any are blown or not operating the transmission and engine would shut down as a safety precaution in this case

06 Ion and same as everyone. Powersteering goes out and if you turn the car of and back on it will work fine for a while or might just last for 5 minutes. Any solutions?

Check the power steering pump fluid, power steering belt tension and pulley and that your wheel alignment is good. There are also some things on GM vehicles with the steering features such as variable resist, that are magnetically controlled. When powered down the magnets or solenoids lose the polarity used to operate. Sometimes disconnecting the battery for a half hour or a little more solves these problems for long periods.

Power steering goes out intermittingly. Switch

I would start by doing a power steering fluid flush.

I have a 2006 Saturn ION as well and the PWR STR light came on and the power steering went out. When i turn off the car and turn back on it's fine for a while but goes out again in a day or so. I called Saturn and they said it is the power steering which is electric and to fix it i would have to replace the whole steering column! If it is not the fuses which i haven't checked yet then it will cost me $850.00 to replace. that's not counting whatever else they find and charge me for. I was looking under 2004 Saturn Ion and they have a lot of the same issues. I don't know where to look for the fuses at though I'm thinking under the steering wheel if anyone knows please let me know.

Thanks

Mom!
