Question about 1996 Toyota 4Runner

1 Answer

1996 Toyota 4Runner - Key gets stuck in the ignition. I replaced the ignition locking cyilinoid and it still gets stuck every once in a while. After some research I am assuming that it might be a sensor in the shifter (automatic) that tells everything that the vehicle is in park. Any information will help... Is my research correct and if it is how would I go about replacing that switch/sensor? If its not what could be the issue? Thanks a Bunch!!

You are quite correct. You can try to adjust the cable but on those I think all you can do is replace it. I'm refering to the cable that locks the key from coming out unless it's in park, not the transmission shift cable. The actual name is "shift interlock cable" if you want to sound professional, lol.

you can try to remove said instrument with plyers, easiest way for me to fix a car like that is to replace the whole dang steering column. 1992 toyota 4runner ignition is locked cannot turn the key

I had the same problem and after reading this thread contacted an automobile lock smith. He stated that the first thing to do is get a new key made to the factory key code. The metal in the key is softer than the metal pins in the lock tumbler, and when you make copies from an old key it copies the wear plus some.
I did not have the key code fob that came with the car so the lock smith told me to take the VIN# to the Toyota dealer and they can cut a key based upon the stored code for my 4Runner.

$10 later it works fine with the new key and a heck of a lot cheaper than spending the $200 to have the ignigition drilled and replaced.

1995 toyota 4runner, ignition switch stuck in lock, cannot get in acc. to remove and replace. have tried normal repair procedures with no success.

Make sure that you steering wheel is not putting too much pressure on the lock. If your wheels are cramped it can make the key switch turn very hard. On one occasion, I had to hold the steering wheel with both hands and have someone else turn the key.

Can't turn key all the way on 1996 Toyota Camry.

Is your steering wheel locked? Turn the key as much as you can, then turn the steering wheel and see if it releases the lock. You should be able to completely turn the key after this.

Key stuck in ignition of 1996 Toyota 4Runner

This truck has a switch in the shifter assembly that tells the ignition the truck is in Park or not. If the shifter doesn't hit that switch right this can happen. Also, there is a component in the ignition (a solenoid) that allows the key to be released if the Park switch is pushed. To be sure it's one of these two things, try this.... Get the key stuck, then disconnect the battery. If the key comes right out, it's either the switch or the solenoid. Good luck!
