Question about 2003 Kia Sedona

Idling very low....bucking at times and lots of hesitation. Cleaned the mass airflow sensor, seemed to help for a couple weeks but has started acting up again.

When you clean the MAS you should use no residue electrical cleaner - some solvent 'cleaners' leave a residue which affects the MAS operation. Two other areas to check are the IAC Idle Air Control valve on the throttle body. The ECU opens the IAC when the throttle is closed, at idle, and allows a measured volume of air to pass the throttle and thereby ensure an even running engine. Generally if the IAC is at fault the symptom is that if you put load on the engine at idle, such as engage the power steering, the engine speed dies away or stops. Just take the IAC off and clean it with Carb. or brake solvent cleaner and a cloth. Working in conjunction with the IAC is the TPS (throttle position sensor) which is a variable potentiometer that measures the throttle shaft rotation usually located on the throttle body opposite the accelerator to throttle spring loaded cam. There three electrical contacts: on one side it is at 0 to 0.48volts; the other side is 5 volts: and the middle one is the centre contact arm. When the throttle turns the contact arm sweeps in an arc from the 0 volts end towards the 5 volts end sending a voltage that the ECU interprets as throttle position. If the IAC clean up does not work and the TPS is OK then have a look at the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve. If this valve fails open or the exhaust gas feeder tube is blocked the engine runs hot and is very hesitant with misfiring

Try cleaning the Mass airflow sensor and replacing the air filter. You can buy the spray MAF sensor cleaner from any auto parts store for about $6.00, ask the parts guy how to use it.

My 2005 Mazda 3, Engine Problems

I honestly think that it is your mass airflow sensor that either went bad or needs cleaning. Auto Zone can run a computer test on your car and diagnose your problem, and if so, they carry a special can of Mass Airflow Cleaner put out by CVR that cost around 6 or 7 bucks. The mass airflow sensor determines how rich to make the gas. This would cause the car to hesitate or jump. Hope this helps. Please leave feedback!

I am having hesitation when start of acceleration. Already changed plugs, fuel filter

I had the same problem. New plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, MASS airflow sensor cleaned and still it would hesitate. It seemed to get worse when warm. Sunday I fixed the problem. Take the distributor cap and rotor off. Under the rotor there is a metal plate held on by two screws. Take the plate off, this will expose the optical Cam sensor. I took a can of MASS airflow cleaner (Plastic safe)(can buy at advanced auto parts) and sprayed heavily. Once it was dry I put it all back together and it runs like new.

Mass air meter not reading vane postion

hey rob_andersen,

yes their is a way to replace the mass air flow. Get a can of brake clean or throttle cleaner, throttle cleaner is going to work best. remove the until and spray it down with throttle clean, let it dry for about 15 min. and reinstall it.

Now a little warning for you, IF their is no visual damage to the mass air flow then you can do this successfully. Now the reason why I always replace them instead of spraying them down is because is MOST cases the mass air flow will start acting up again. Sometimes it takes a weeks, sometimes months, sometimes years its hard to say.

But the worst you have to loose, is it doenst work an your out 5 bucks for the can of fluid.

Check the timing and compression of the engine. It sounds like you either have a blown head gasket or a the timing jumped.
