Question about 2002 Mitsubishi Montero
I have a Mitsubishi Pajero NM 2002 3.2lt diesel which has had its upper timing chain tensioner replace two weeks ago. A large noise started coming out from the front of the engine again and have now been advised that the lower tensioner has now gone and has jumped two teeth. They don't seem to think the valves have hit the piston as it is still running. They have advised that to change the lower tensioner you have to remove the head or maybe the sump to get at it and it is a huge job. Just want to check that this is the only way to do this and if the chain should also be replaced at the same time. The car has travelled 248,500km and was running terrific up until this will most of the km's on the highway. Thank you for any assistance you can provide. All the best
I checked out the pajero forum, they don't mention the bottom tensioner as being the noise maker here but rather a sloppy chain, stretched beyond the tensioner and riding on the guides. The noise sounds like it comes from the fan area as a metallic chattering. They sell a chain that has a master link in it, and you don't have to tear down the entire engine again to get to it, just the top cover,, Cut the old chain, and use it to pull the new one through. Also, if your chain did jump its gear, it would only be a matter of 8 - 10 miles before the cam breaks. Hope this helps.
