Question about 2003 Volkswagen Golf

I used a Haynes VW Golf manual to renew a front suspension coil spring on my 2003 Seat Leon but found removal of the strut almost impossible with the lower arm in position.I have now managed to damage the driveshaft CV joint gaiter in the struggle. Any helpful suggestions? David.

Disconnect the front sway bar linkage from the control arm. Disconnect the steering ball joint and lower control arm ball joint then and only then you will have elbow room work around once you have removed the axle nut from the CV joint. Sorry no short cut for this procedure, some even disconnect the control arm from the car to persuade the removal.

    I know it would be a bit expensive but it is worth every penny for the official Bentley factory manual, available in hard copy or disc.. All my cars are VW from 1980 to 2000 and have several manuals which helped me when I was just an apprentice for a VW dealership. I rebinded my old ones because they are so used up. Invest in one and you'd start having confidence repairing your own car in no time.

Does the 97 vw golf gl 2.0 have 4 struts for suspension or is it struts in the front and shocks in the back?


struts in the front and shocks in the rear, the rear shocks have coil springs over the shocks, like the front struts, but you dont need to use a spring compressor tool on them which is neccessary on struts

2000 Nissan Pathfinder struts. The Haynes manual says that the notch in the upper spring seat is supposed to face outwards. The notch on the strut I removed was facing inwards. Which way is correct?


I know, right. I had the same problem using the Haynes manual when I replaced mine on my '97 4WD Pathfinderl. With the notch facing away from the vehicle, it does not look right, because the angle of the upper seat does not match the coil spring winding angle. I didn't take note of the location of the notch prior to removal. I still installed the upper spring seat with the notch facing outward per the manual. I still wonder if this is correct. What have you found out?

Unable to remove strut with lower arm in place and driveshaft connected to hub.Ifollowed Haynes Golf manual procedure but found space too tight to remove strut even with spring compressed.Eventually...


The swaybar is still giving you tension. The link has to be disconnected to the control arm. You need to disconnect the balljoint for the tie rod. Before removing the lower ball joint from the hub assembly, mark with a punch for reference when putting it back. There is no need to remove the center nut for CV joint unless it is the original strut which is longer when in static position. Note; DO NOT roll vehicle on the ground without a CV joint connected to the hub, wheel bearing will be crushed from vehicle weight.

You can use a 1/4" extension end placed on the slot to spread the strut carrier wide enough to release the strut from the carrier.

No but need to release the sway bar link from the control arm and the tie rod from the wheel bearing assembly.

How do I fill the gearbox oil on my Seat Leon 1.9 TDi? (same engine as a VW Golf 1.9 TDi)


If the car is a manual shift,the filler / level plug (Allen key) is on the front of the gearbox. Simply remove and fill to this level. Box holds 2.5 litres of 75/ 80 grade oil. Do NOT use EP grade

Replacing front struts


Okay....here is the steps first....and then the directions on how to use the tools:

  1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the front wheel.
  3. Detach the shock absorber lower mount by removing the two bolts.
  4. Remove the retainer nut, retainer, cushion and shock absorber.
  5. Detach the cushion retainer from the shock absorber.
  6. Compress the coil spring with a commercially available spring compressor.
  7. Detach the stabilizer bar.
  8. Support the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle securely.
  9. Remove the cotter pin.
  10. Loosen and remove the nut.
  11. Using a ball joint removal tool, detach the lower ball joint from the lower control arm.
  12. Loosen the suspension arm set bolt.
  13. Remove the suspension arm set bolt nut.
  14. Remove the nut from the strut bar front set bolt.
  15. Pull out both set bolts.
  16. Remove the lower suspension arm and coil spring. To install:
  17. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the following torque specifications:
    1. Strut bar front set bolt: 221 ft. lbs. (300 Nm)
    2. Lower suspension arm set bolt: 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)
    3. Lower ball joint nut: 80 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
    4. Lug nuts: 83 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
