Question about 1998 Honda Accord

1 Answer

I replaced my water pump at 90,000 miles. Do I have to replace it again at 180,000? I have 182,000 on my 1998 Honda Accord EX, 5 Speed. Also how long do the clutches last? Also the paint does start fading at around 7 years.

Firstly replacement waterpump is not time sensitive, change it when it goes.
the clutch can last from 7seconds,foot rest, to 150k if driven long distances, sometimes longer,
the paint is water based and should be waxed every year to stop it fading too badly,(good maintenance always pays off.....)red/blue are the worse.

Timing belt

Nancy, the Honda recommendations are to change belt 100,000 Km/ 60000 miles or every 7 years which ever occurs first. So if timing belt has not been changed, YES change it. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

I have 1995 Honda accord LX 4 door, it has 135,000 miles. Recently when driving, it is stopping all of a sudden without any warning on the road. It is very scary when car looses it power and stops...

If you haven't had the timing belt done, there is a good chance that the timing belt broke. It is due to be replaced every 90,000 miles along with the water pump. You have an interference engine which means that if the timing belt fails, the valves will hit pistons likely cause damage to the engine. Best case, you get away with having the timing belt replaced. Worst case, you will need an engine.

90k miles, recommended to replace also the water pump, idler and tensioner pulleys. Shop costs (3hr labor) $450-$750 depending on their labor rate and parts price.

Common problems with 92 honda 5 speed

A/C Problem usuallyabout 200,000 miles (specifically high pressure hose leaks and compressor clutch usually within 30,000 miles of the hose going.)
At about 250,000 miles or so the main relay goes usually at about 290,000 Torque convertor in Automatic Transmission starts to slip.. Manual tranny can't say too much there depends on how you drive . replace clutches at every 50K or at 150K depends on driver. The cat and the mufflers usually go at abot 190,000 give or take (depends how much water you drove threw). Lastly fast idle cam valve about every 120,000. As you can see this is a great car to own.

Loose timing belt

The tensioner is defective. Replace the tensioner and the belt. Also replace the Balance Shaft belt. Also replace the water pump which is driven by the cam belt. This will save you labor costs later on. On your Honda the belt must be replaced every 90,000 miles. Your engine is an interference engine and as such if the belt breaks serious engine damage will occur.

When should a get the timing belt replaced?

It is critical that you replace the cam belt at 90,000 miles on the 4 cylinder and V6. Both engines are interference engines and as such if the belt breaks serious engine damage will occur. The water pump is also driven by the cam belt so to save labor costs later on have the water pump replaced at the same time you replace the cam belt. Have the cooling system flushed, thermostat replaced, and a fresh supply of a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water installed. You will be good to go for another 90,000 miles.

How do i install a water pump in a 1995 honda accord ex 2.2 L sohc vtech

The water pump is driven by the cam belt and that belt must be removed in order to replace the pump. There is also a balance shaft belt. You engine is an interference engine and as such if the belt breaks you will have serious engine damage. Also if you remove the cam belt, put it back on incorrectly and start the engine, you will have damage. There is too little space here to tell you how to do this. I suggest you pay a professional or purchase a repair manual in order to diy correctly. The cam belt must be replaced every 90,000 miles.

Can you tell me what should be done on a 90,000 mile servicing for a 2005 honda Accord. I am getting different quotes from different dealerships/facilities. Thank you!

You need to have the cam belt & water pump replaced at 110,000 miles not 90,000. You should have the transmission fluid changed, brakes & all hoses inspected. The coolant should be drained, thermostat replaced and fresh coolant installed. Of course the air & cabin filter should be replaced every 30,000 miles. The fuel filter is permanent and needs no replacing. Brake fluid should be changed unless you have already had this done. Serpentine belt replaced at 110,000 miles with the cam belt.
