NO.a garage doesnt even have to ask you what "extras"you want(aux belt)although if they asked you would you have agreed as "most garages are a ripoff trying to fit items that are not required...."the majority are not cowboys but get tarred with the same brush.

Can someone tell me if the 2005 Mazda 6 2.0 diesel 136ps has a cambelt or chain? If it is a belt when should I replace it. I'm on 116000 km's.

Filipe, Gates is a timing belt manufacturer and they recommend changing belt every 100,000 KM. This is what is known as a interference fit engine, If the timing belt were to break, it could cause extensive damage to valve train. Through some searching, recommended Timing Belt change interval is 60/75000 miles or every 72 months. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

My 2000 Quest has 170,000 miles and the timing belt broke while I was driving it. Luckily there was no damage to the engine. I want to trade it in and my husband wants to keep. We have not kept up with...

This engine is freewheeling, as requested by Ford for the joint venture program with the Mercury Villlager. So, no engine damage if timing belt breaks. Just install a new belt and maybe the water pump while you are therre and new other belts. It will run another 100,000 miles.

What service should be done on a 2000 new beetle that has 20,000 miles? If a timing belt fails will it total an engine as in a honda?

yes, it is an interference engine, so if the timing belt fails it blows the engine, but 20K is very early to worry about that. at that mileage, there shouldnt be too much to worry about other then maybe some fluids.

If the timing belt breaks does this shear or bend the valves on a 2000 deawoo lanos?

All Daewoo Engines are interference fit Engines. Which means that if the timing belt rips while the engine is running the pistons will hit and bend the valves and you will have to get new valves and possibly a new cylinder head. Worst case scenario you will also have to get a new engine block if for some reason chunks or pieces of valve, piston or cylinder head damaged the cylinder bore and cracked the block while things were moving around. Daewoo Timing belts are recommended to be replaced at 60,000 miles but it is best to replace them before 60k as some people have had their timing belts break on them as soon as 61,000 miles.

Cambelt sliped or broken. does the valves bend.

what is the liter size of your engine? the 1.8L is an interference engine. generally all Audi engines are interference engines, and timing belt breakage can bend valves, the sure way to determine without detailed maintenance information, install a new belt, once the belt is on immediately run a compression test, if timing marks are good and compression fails, valves are bent.

Fan belt broke cambelt!

Hi
Yes, very true, I should have thought that it would have been sensible procedure, to renew a contaminated fan belt.

I also believe that the cam belt cover should have been removed, to inspect the cam belt, for oil contamination at that time too.
As an oil saturated cam belt would be more consistent to a failure, than a fan belt snapping and getting behind the cover, causing cam belt failure !

You have to seek an appointment with the Dealer Manager, and voice you dissatisfaction with there service, and that the resulting costs would not have been necessary, had my first 2 options above been carried out.
As usual, this smell of shoddy main Dealer Servicing.

By the way, what have they told you the estimated damage is to the engine ?
Normally it would only be a couple of bent valves, requiring, the cylinder head removal, fit new valves, cam belt, fan belt, etc, and reassemble, change oil & filter, & test coolant strength.

Good Luck !

A FixYa rating would be apreciated please !

Broken timing chain corsa

Not good. I would expect the garage to foot this expence as Im sure your initial bill was far from a cheep one? If a customer of mine had suffered a similar issue, I would certainly work very closely with them to rectify the problem. There is of course a slim chance a catastrophic component failure has genuinely occured, which may be completely unrelated. However it is most unlikely this time, as when your timing chain failed the valve to piston collision/impact would have caused serious potential damage to the crankshaft and big end bearings. This symptom is not overly common in most engines where timing chain/belt failure occurs. However, all engines are different and may experience different levels of damage. A replacement engine does now seem the cheepest way forward in your situation. Perhaps the garage should source one and you might pay for the fitting only? Good luck

Timing belt

I would have thought it should be done around 100,000 kms like most cars, but some makes are extending the service schedules for cambelts these days. If it has never been replaced, then it is imperative that it gets done very soon. Without getting too technical, if the cambelt was to break, the cam suddenly stops while the engine is running potentially leaving a valve wide open. The pistons keep moving as they are powered on by the motion of the vehicle, and they smash into the open valves, causing a great deal of damage to the engine internals. This sounds expensive and it is. Often it is cheaper to install a second hand engine than repair the old one after a broken cambelt. So yes, do it soon!!
