Check thermostat for correct operation. Remove it and put it in a pan of boiling water. Take pan from heat and observe the 'stat. It should open immediately it is immersed. Hook it out while it is hot and it should quickly close as it cools. Check that your radiator fan is running when top hose to radiator becomes hot. Some fans are electrically driven and switch on in response to a thermostatic switch. Other fans are driven off the end of the engine pulley either directly or through a thermally engaged viscous clutch. If the latter ensure that the fan blade rotation is fairly stiff even when cold. A bad clutch is usually indicated by the blades freely rotating with the slightest push when cold.

Have someone sit in the car with the emergency brake on and their foot on the brakes and check the fluid in neutral.

Car sputters out

Change fuel filter first, if that doesn't help, check timing, and timing belt, spark plugs, and wires. Also look and listen for vacuum leaks with a stethoscope, or a length of fuel line hose held to your ear. Wiggle all vacuum hoses while engine is running, and listen for a hissing sound.
