1998 pontiac sunfire gt standard transmission diagram having shifter problems trying to find out why

Check that as you move the shifter, that the shifting rods beneath are moving in tune with the shifter's position.
If not, then your mechanism is faulty.
It is almost certain that the issue lies with the external shifting mechanism.
The issue may be just beneath the shifter lever, within the rubber or leather bag shroud. You might have to pull out the centre console to have a closer inspection.

I have a 99 Sunfire, my car was in reverse when I got ready to put it in drive my gear shift would not go in gear it freely moves like somethings broken.I turned it off and it would not start up again

the linkage where the shifter connects to the trans has problems and the nuetral safety switch keeps the car off--go to a parts store and buy a haynes maintenance book--dont bring it to a dealership if u cant fixit--look for an honest independent

Same as above. Shifter moves but stays in park!!

Likely the shift cable has broken or become disconnected. Move the shifter and watch the control arm on the transmission to see if it moves. If not, check/ replace the cable.
