Check engine light is on in my 01 Durango, I had the code read (which wasnt told to me) but I do know it was an emissions code so I bought a new gas cap, which i guess fixes most problems, but it;s still on

Without knowing the codes it is impossible to guess what will fix your concern

however, since the part store sold you a gas cap I am going to assume that the code was something like a P0442 which is a small leak

that being said there is NO scan tool that will tell you what part needs to be replaced

I would advise you go back to the part store and DEMAND a refund since the gas cap did not fix your concern

additionally, the only way to know where your leak is coming from will be to use a smoke tester which will pressurize the EVAP system so you can find the leak

the possible problems are...
1.) gas tank
2.) purge solenoid
3.) filler neck
4.) all vacuum/evap lines (about a mile worth)
5.) charcoal canister
6.) gas cap

I am sure I'm forgetting something but I think you get the point... lots of parts can cause the code and the light but without the code it is nearly impossible to guess at what part should be replaced next

The gas cap was an easy guess...but a guess nevertheless and obviously WRONG! get your money back and make them give you the code!!!

I cannot get my check engine light to stay off. It comes on and off and I was told it was the gascap. The ABS light wasnt reset when I had some repairs done. How can I get them both to stay off.

Some auto parts stores have pressure testers to check the seal on your gas cap to ensure it's not loosing pressure or you can buy a new one. I would suggest checking your vehicle for trouble codes first to be sure though. If it's your gas cap it will be an evaporative emissions control code. Your abs system requires a separate scanner to check for problems but usually it is just the sensor that goes bad and needs to be replaced.

Replace the gas cap and then either ask the auto zone to reset the computer again or disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery for 1 min then reconnect it.

My engine light came on. The OBD reads emissions leak large. I have already bought a new gas cap and the light came back on. Any suggestions.

Why would you buy a gas cap?
You were told a large leak, diagnose those issues ,by having the EVAP System smoke tested and repaired

My 2000 dodge durango failed the emissions due to a bad catalytic converter... The check engine light did not come on. Could there be any other reason why it would fail?

really need more info on your durango ? millage , engine , other causes for poor emissions are weak motors , poor gas , tuneup problems and worn emission parts like lazy O2 sensors and catalytic converters

Check Engine Light won't go off

If you have an Advance Auto Parts store where ever you are, they will read the code and tell you exactly what to code is and what it means. Any mechanic who "guesses" isn't a mechanic at all - he's a thief. Emissions leak can be any number of things, but not the gas cap!

I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu. The check engine

"This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as small as 0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine."
Hope that helps..

01 sonata gls v6...code po455, po442. what are these and how can I pass emissions test in arizona

If you have an EVAP leak, you will get the following codes:

1. P0442 evap emission control system leak (small).
2. P0455 evap emission control system leak (large).

If these codes come up, you need to trace the leak. The most common place for the systems to leak besides the gas cap is at the service port under the hood, the hoses at the purge solenoid, and the hoses around the fuel tank. Check all your EVAP hoses from under the hood , all the way back to the gas tank. You can repair a split hose easily. Buy some 14.5mm EVAP hose at the auto parts store. Just cut the split or cracked section out and attach the new hose.

I can only say that u must fix the code issue and light to pass state emission test, if u reset the light they will know, the system will tell the tester that the system is not ready, this will cause a fail.
