It sounds as if the cooling fan(s) aren't working. It could be a bad fan, sending unit, ecm(electronic control module), or even a bad wiring connection. When the engine starts to get hot open the hood and look at the fan on the radiator if its not spinning then one of the mentioned parts could be the cause.

Can a bad tensioner cause an engine to overheat?

A bad tensioner can cause an engine to overheat in the sense that when a bad tensioner breaks, it will cause a loss of turning movement to all the accessories of the engine including the water pump, and when the water pump stops turning, the flow of coolant will stop and the engine will start to overheat.

Engine Overheating

no other signs just the dash gauge, upset? what if its fibbing?
no steam, no water to ground overflowing overflow tank.
no engine pinging. no lost power, from engine, SIGNS. are key. here.
Did you consider using a IR pyro gun for $20 and find if it is really overheating,? the gun also finds clogged rad tubes, childs play like.
are you loosing coolant. that is when cold actually off the cap
and look down deep in the RAD tank? This matters, most.

which engine,? 2.5,4L or bigger?
what does no coolant going into...., mean.?
it's a loop system.
first off, we need to know does it overheat only parked?
or can you drive it from cold and keep it going and it never overheats
moving fast.?
if the engine stays cool 180F, moving fast , then your stop. and NOW it it overheats, that means the fan is dead.
or a marginal radiator, (Pyro gun to rescue)

2004 jeep liberty not reading sensors

did you first check all fuses???? that be 1st !!!
dead cold engine, I OFF the rad cap, is the system full? of AF?
is the AF/ tested at 50% with the $2 tool? "prestone tool"
Does the AF coolant look like Mississippi mud?
AF= Antifreeze SOLUTION (coolant)

is this the 3.7L V6? , ????? that be first. what engine option. of 4.
even a 2.8L diesel.

no, the PCM is not the problem(CPU the brain) not at all.
unless the fans die... on 2.4L engine. got 2.4?
first tell us when it overheats. ?

parked. stopped only?
moving fast? ever? overheat.?
both ways?
Does the fan kick on , as the FSM tells you,.???

2 engines, have a viscous fan clutch others have electric fan
until you post engine. we can not help.

is the radiator fins clean? free of junk? front to rear.
if yes, it should not overheat moving fast.
if it only overheats parked, the fan is bad.
or clogged rad tubes... (easy test ask, with $15 pyro gun)

there is a start..

On car panel it indicated stop engine overheat

The cpu found that the engine coolant temperature was above that needed to prevent damage to the engine . It should have gone into limp mode or stopped the engine. IF you ignored this simple warning then it is possible that the engine can suffer damage.

2000 sebring 2.5 stalls out and overheats

Have the fault codes read. Replace faulty items. Use only genuine items as non-genuine replacement are not always compatible with the OEM fitted CPU units. The engine light is telling you that the cpu has found a fault ( probably overheating) from a radiator fan not coming on. The stalling could be the cpu going into protect mode and stopping the engine

Serpentine belt problem?? heater blowing cold air.

If the serpentine belt broke, the water pump would have also stopped turning, causing coolant to stop flowing...therefore the heater would run cold. Since the belt also turns the alternator, the charging system would also stop working (alt light).
Since nothing is flowing through the engine or radiator, the engine will quickly overheat. Since your engine oil also does a bit of cooling as well as lubrication, oil passing through the overheated block will break down and overheat as well. Hopefully the light came on for that before any internal bearing damage was done. Smoke was due to the overheat.
Your serpentine belt likely is not covered under a warranty, especially after four years.
Hopefully the problem is isolated to just the belt but I do recommend that if you have an automatic transmission you change the fluid in that even if you are not at the change interval recommended. Trans oil is cooled by the cooling system and a severe overheat can chemically change it. Doing a change now will avoid any overheat related trans failure. Since you can't remove all the trans fluid (at best during a change you only remove half) so I recommend using a bottle of lucas trans additive to bolster the remaining fluid.
Good luck!!
