Question about 1996 Dodge Caravan

Open Question

1996 dodge caravan sport 3.3liter fuel injection The problem slapped me in the face again last month. Engine refuses to start, no spark no fuel......auto shutdown activated.... Last year, I replaced camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, master fuse box (complete with all relays and fuses) the infamous ECM and checked wiring harness from end to end to end. The problem slapped me in the face again last month. Engine refuses to start, no spark no fuel......auto shutdown activated.... The van, she runs again.......crossed fingers and many prayers.... After many suggestions and plenty of tests and guesses, I asked the internet, the internet answered after many hours and I pulled out the crankshaft sensor (after removing air intake filter cowling) , digging in deep and picking the right socket/extension combination.I unscrewed the crankshaft sensor hold-down bolt and pulled out the sensor. I unplugged it from the harness to better view the possible culprit of engine failure to start for past month. I took a kleenex and wiped away some tiny metal shards that had accumulated (over time) on the surface of the business end of the sensor, therefore telling the engine control module (computer) that the crankshaft was not turning, so engine did not require electricity or fuel .I then replaced the sensor and proceeded to start the van as if there was no question of it's starting and, well, it started and has started and run many times today. I will run more tests tomorrow and keep you all posted. The sensor attracts metal particles until the sensor believes that the crank is present. I believe many 3.3 liters are in junk-yards due to these metal fragments. Please advise all future question askers to check this first, it's a free fix, let's just hope it holds out

SOURCE: 1997 dodge dakota v6 engine wont start replaced

turn the key to the on position a see if you can here a buzzing sound around the fuel tank,if you don't hear a sound then. (be very careful while doing this) with the key off take a fuel line coming from the tank loose, make sure its pointed away from you and turn the key to the on position, see if any gas comes out,if not then your fuel pump is probably bad.

SOURCE: Dodge 2006 3.3 L Caravan doesn't start,fuse box prob.

Sorry to say that you have proablely shorted out the IPM( intergrated power module) yes the fuse box under the hood is a module with a computer plugged into the front of it. It controls the power to all the systems. You can try to let it dry out . If doesnt work you need to have it towed to the dealer . They can use a scan tool to see if they can communicate with the computers and actuate different componant. If they cant it has failed.

SOURCE: 97 Dodge Caravan Auto-Shutdown Problem

Been working on my dad's 97 Caravan longer then i can remember for things you mentioned and have been not able to get him to sell it.
I found that the electrical connections are prone to corrosion and have replaced lots of the wire and pin connection in the wire harness, thank god i have time on my hands.
The instrument panel where the wire harness connects, i found that the solder goes bad and i had to re solder the connector on the back side of the circuit board, where the harness goes so you need to remove the instrument panel from the dash,
Here is a link that can help you retrieve DTC codes and do research on your caravan. I'ld tell you everything what i needed to do to keep my dad's caravan running but that would be a novel. http://www.allpar.com/fix/stall.html

Good luck and keep me posted, glad to help you keep yours running too.

SOURCE: 2003 dodge caravan won't start

My 2003 dodge caravan would not start after driving about 1/2 hour. I stopped for coffee and when got back in to start it started I switched gears and it stalled. I tried to start again switched gears then it started but only for 2 sec. No clicking, no cranking sound just would not start but battery functions were great. Spent 2 days with a mechanic who could not resolve so sent to Dodge. After a day of putting wires back and checking out the problem they said it was the computer. Said that it was bad and could be replaced at no charge due to malfunction. Yes, it worked fine afterwards no more problems. They also said that some of the computers are found to be defective like this one so I hope this helps you in the right choice to have the dealer check it out if you are unable to get a computer reading and there is no obvious short in the system. Free sounded very good but as you know there is no such thing as really free as they got me for other things $350 worth. ouch!

My 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan will crank but won't start.

Hi, if an engine cranks but refuses to start, it lacks ignition, fuel or compression. When the engine cranks normally but won't start, you need to check ignition, fuel and compression. Ignition is easy enough to check with a spark tester or by positioning a plug wire near a good ground. No spark? The most likely causes would be a failed ignition module, distributor pickup or crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.

I HAVE A 2005 DODGE CARAVAN I WAS GOING DOWN THE ROAD AND IT JUST STALLED. THE FUEL PUMP COMES ON BUT THE ENGINE DOESNT START..

If you have good fuel pressure. Check for spark at any plug while cranking, If no spark, also place a screw driver on an injector and listen to it while someone cranks it over. If you have NO spark and NO injector click - crank sensor needs to be replaced. 95%
other 5% hmmm wiring problem on / near crank or cam sensors, theft system active, dead pcm.......

Ignition switch

Next time this happens leave the key in the on position, open the hood and lift the fuel solenoid link (between the fuel solenoid and the injection pump) up. If it stays up the truck will start and run. The solenoid is shot but that might be a symptom of set of bad starter contacts.

The contacts start to pit bad enough that the power back feeds through fuel solenoid. Larry B is a good source for the parts to fix these problems: http://www.fostertruck.com/dodge/default.htm
