Have the computer scanned for trouble codes at your local auto parts store, Murray's, Checkers, Autozone. That will help pinpoint the problem that's tripping the check engine light. If its burning allot of oil it may be a catalyst error code causing the check engine light to come on, but this is just a guess.

I have a 2004 Toyota highlander leaking oil, oil light comes on. Could it be the rubber rings?

a 2004 toyota highlander V6

this should be your engine type
The 2GR-FE is a 3.5 L (3456 cc)

if leaks are that bad
always check the engine oil level before you drive off

fixing oil leaks on motors
degrease whole motor top and bottom

start with replacing the oil sender it may be the cause of the oil light coming on
after degrease
lay cardboard or paper under the car
take out for a drive and park over the paper over night

this pin points most of the oil leak locations
leaks from a V6 motor
rocker covers/ spark plug tube 0 rings.engine seals
cam seals
front and rear engine seals leak often
sump gasket can leak

if oil consumption or light on continues
can be a failing engine oil pump
or worn main bearings giving low oil pressure to the whole engine
you could be burning oil from worn piston rings
or hardened valve stems

a mechanic can fit an oil pressure gauge to the motor when hot
to check running oil pressure to confirm low oil pressure

if engine is worn out

it is possible to fit a lower mileage used motor to your highlander
its often cheaper than and engine rebuild

Burning smell

Check the valve covers for small leaks, the oil will run down onto the exhaust manifold and this causes the burning smell. Oil leaks on this model and engine is a very common issue.

Oil smoke.coming from both sides of engine

Check your rocker cover gaskets for any signs of oil leaks. Oil leaking from your engine can contact the exhaust headers, or other hot parts of the engine and can burn, resulting in smoking and a burning smell.

My check oil light comes on every two weeks

the oil light is generally an indicator that you are low on oil ... if your engine is burning oil, you should check the system for leaks (is there black sludge on your engine, does it smoke while running, does it blow smoke out the tail pipe, etc). when the light comes on, check your oil level ... if it is still full, you might have a faulty sensor. if there is oil on the top half of the engine, you probably need a valve-cover gasket replacement. If there is a pool of oil under your car when you park it there are three things it could be: 1. You have a leak in your oil system, and it is leaking out of the hoses ... bring it in for service (mechanics have an additive that they can put in your oil that glows in blacklight, which helps to find a leak) 2. You have a bad seal on your oil pan -- get it replaced and you should be fine 3. your drain plug bolt on your oil pan is loose -- tighten it up and make sure your oil is full and you will be fine.

The smell of burning oil is coming out my muffler

You are leaking oil somewhere in the engine and it may be getting into the exhaust. There are a few places it can come out at. It could be leaking around the head, down into the exhaust possibly. Could be a busted seal or at the oil pump.

Burning smell and smoke coming from hood

you may have an oil leak and the oil is burning off of the hot exhaust or engine youll have to open the hood in order to decipher where the oil is coming from. or if its even oil it could be transmission fluid coolant a number of things youll have to see if you can tell exactly what it is thats leaking but my best guess is its probably oil.if it is oil its more than likely coming from the valve cover. id check there first.

Smell gas in oil, check engine light on, collant

Your brother is on to something I believe.

Your coolant is rusty or milkshake-like?

If you arent leaking coolant or oil I think the both being burned in the combustion chambers! Look for oily steam at the tailpipe!

The check engine light probably came on because your O2 sensors are both shot from the excessive oil and coolant baking onto them!

My car isn't leaking oil but I changed the oil about 2 weeks ago and went to check it and it was bone dry; also having a problem with the right head light low beam, changed the bulb also the harness wire....

If the car is smoking through the muffler then its burning the oil if not, check for a loose engine filter or leaky oil pressure sensor that leaks only when the car is running.
