Sticky 2001 tracker speedometer

I recently bought a 2001 Tracker with 64000 miles and only 1 owner. i love the car. But the other day I noticed that the speedometer wasn't working. Everything else was functioning properly, so I used the "poor man's fix" and flicked it with my finger. The speedometer popped right up and functioned well. After sitting for several days it did the same thing. I used the same fix with the same results. Any ideas on what the problem is and if so what is the fix?

I would say that there is an electrical problem with the speedometer itself, possibly some dust or dirt has got into it, causing the sticking problem. You would need to remove the speedometer and try blowing some compressed air into the speedometer, or maybe apply some oil or graphite to the speedometer. Or have the speedometer replaced.

Does the pcm on a 2001 chevy tracker have any control over the speedometer

Yes it does but only indirectly. Keep in mind the PCM is the very least likely part to cause a problem with the speedometer. The common problem is the tiny little motor that moves the needle files.

I recently bought a very nice Chevy tracker 2001 with 64000 miles on it. Recently I have noticed oil seeping around the valve covers. Should I replace them now to my car in tip top shape or should I wait...

I would recommend taking car of it now. Oil or any flammable type liquid could potentially cause a fire if it gets on the exhaust manifold. Besides keeping your engine clean makes it easier to spot when there is a worse problem.
Sometimes you can just remove covers clean gasket, if not torn, add gasket sealer and re-install. But new gaskets are not that expensive anyway. Good Luck!
