1999 VW Cabrio Speedometer Not Working

A friend of ours said the cause of the problem may be coming from the speedometer transmitter. Is that true? If so, where is it located and is there a way to have it checked?
Thank you....

It is possible,if it's not a speedo itself.
if you would have VAG COM scaner , you could check instrument cluster and determine if you have bad speedo or speed sensor.
Speed sensor on the transmission , should be around differencial.

I have a 1999 Buick century. The speedometer and all other cluster panel lights up but my speedometer doesn't work. What could cause the speedometer to stop working?

it could be the vehicle speed sensor(VSS) in the transmission gone bad or the VSS transducer that converts electrical pulses to a speed reference that shows on your speedometer or you may have a speedometer head problem.

The speedo should get power from the same circuit the other gauges are on.
If the speedo and odometer are not working, the problem could be the speed sensor in the transmission.

Speedometer not working in my 1998 vw cabrio

Replace the vehicle speed sensor. It is located on the transmission. If that doesnt solve it, then it would be either a short in the wire from the sensor to the cluster, or your cluster is bad.

He can if it's nothing more than a broken cable, otherwise it gets real difficult. Even getting to the ends of the cable behind the dash could be a frustrating experience.

Speed sensor should be in the front driver's side wheel well. My guess is it was disconnected while you were working.

1999 Cabrio -Speedometer & Tach work intermittently

I have a similar issue, although mine do not stay off. Occasionally, my entire head just resets. RPMs go to 0, speed goes to 0 and the clock resets along with the trip.

You need to find out if your speedometer is cable driven or electronic. If it is cable driven there will be a cable running from your transmission to the back of the speedometer. Sometimes the cables lose their lubrication and break. Usually pretty cheap to replace.

If your speedometer is electronic there is a sensor on your transmission that sends a signal to your speedometer. Either your sensor (called a Vehicle Speed Sensor or VSS) went bad or your speedometer quit working. The sensors are usually inexpensive....the speedometers are NOT! Last one I needed I bought off eBay and purchased one with the lowest miles I could find. If you ever sell the car you have to mark the title that the speedometer is not correct. I usually keep the old speedometer around along with a record of the mileage of the replacement so I can always figure out the cars true mileage if I need to.
