I believe you are turning the clutch on the compressor without it engaged. The clutch has what are like brake shoes inside the pulley and they would probably give you that dry sound when they are lightly dragging on the inside of the pulley

Stop the ac compressor from freezing up in my 2000 montero

It sounds like the bearings in the compressor are shot. Try to remove the drive belt from the pulley and see if you can spin it by hand. Even if you can there still may be a problem with either the bearings or race. You would probably have to replace the compressor. Good luck

I have a screeching noise when I start my 2001 kia optima. My belt that I see is tight and I see no leaks of oil getting on it. I have checked the power steering fluid.

Hi Julie,

If your belt only "screeches" when you first start your engine, the problem is most likely to be related to either your alternator or your air conditioner. Sometimes the bearings in these things start getting worn and cause excess resistance to rotation and will cause a screaching noise that goes away once they are moving. This usually also causes "glazing" on the belt.

Look at the ribbed side of the belt. If it looks "shiny" rather than just a dull black, this is glazing. It may not be necessary at this time to replace anything like the alternator or the air conditioning compressor, but I would recommend replacing a glazed belt and do a THOROUGH check of your pully assemblies while you have the belt off.
Spin all of the pullies (including the tensioner and idler pullies) by hand with the belt off. You should not be able to "hear" them spinning. Any pully or component that feels rough or has a rough or rattling sound when you spin it by hand should probably be replaced.

I have a 2002 Ford taurus the air condition works good its very cold but the pully on the AC compressor is loose and making loud screaching noises. Is there a way to tighten the pully?

The pulley has no adjustment, if it is loose you have a bearing problem. If it only makes noise with the a/c on, I would suspect a clutch or compressor problem. Hope this helps, TJ

2005 Nissan Altima 2.5s 4 cylinder. 1) When stopped in Drive and the air conditioning on - the engine rattles. 2) When stopped in neutral and the air conditioning on - no rattle. 3) When stopped in drive...

no it could be air condition clutch that engage/disengage the air condition compressor and disengage it through the pulley or could be the pulley bearings one of them . also check the solenoid that controls that clutch .
have a good luck sir .

2000 Chevy Cavalier making a noise when air is shut off

This problem sounds like the aircompressor pully, the bearing is shot.
With the engine running and the air conditioner off there is a grinding noise, look at the compressor pully, does it wobble? Then turn on the air conditioner and the noise stops, look at the compressor pully again, the wobble stops? If so that's the problem.

Hi when i put the a/c on i hear a whinnig sound from the compressor area i think its the pully or bearing is that right and if so how do i change that

Look at the belt while it is spinning. Is it wobbeling or spinning straight? If wobbeling , turn off vehicle and check it for wear and looseness. If worn replace if loose tighten if too tight loosen.
if while spinning no wobbeling of belt is observed, use a long screwdriver as a listening device and place it on the compressor. if you hear a whining sound its the bearing inside of the compressor. Time for a new unit.

Air conditioning compressor does not enguage, 134a level is propper, 45psi low side, ot fuses blowen indicator shoews on on max and a/c position, but clutch not enguaged

unplug the wiring to the compressor and see if there is power in the plug if so then try spinning the a/c clutch by hand it should move verry freely and make no bearing sounds if it does make any bearing sounds or does'nt move at all then you have to replace the a/c compressor

I have a 2001 dodge caravan, We have a noise coming from the alternator pully, I think or the tension pully, The noise is very loud and kinda sounds like a gragle.

there are a few things you can do to check this ,it sounds like a bearing from the alternator . it is behind the pully ,or the bearing on the tensioner .you can take the serpentine belt of the alternator by usint a pry bar or a ratchet on the belt tensioner .you can check both by spinning them when ther is no pressure on them the one that makes the same noise sound is the bad one ,there is a diagram on the front hood on how to remove and replace the serpiene belt

AC pully is not spining fast enough. Can the pully be repaired without changing out the compressor. Even when the AC is turned off pully does not free spin.

Intersting description, I do not understand the "fast enough" part.

If the pulley does not spin freely, something (bearing) is not right and the pulley clutch can be serviced without replacing the compressor.

A/C compressor bearing sounds bad. Can bearing & pulley be replac

it is best to replace the whole compressor but if it was me I would go and get a can of 134A oil and put that in first to see that helps with the problem and if not then replace the compressor they are somewhere around $40 to $75 at a good salvage yard and you can try and if you cannot find one there try or call them at 1-800-292-1032
