The usuall problem with this problem is water getting into the socket and causing a short. Check the housing gasget so see if this is the case. If so replace the gasget and clean the socket well. If this is not the case check the wire from the socket back to the fuse block.

Near the brake pedal is a brake light switch. It sounds to be out of adjustment if the lights work at times

Why do side light come on when foot brake applied

Year/make/model??? If any other lights come on when brake is applied, it will normally be caused by a short circuit. It could be a short to ground or short to power. Inspect the brake lights for proper bulb application as well as the brake light bulb sockets for corrossion and bad electrical connections. I have seen the filaments in the brake light bulbs go bad and touch one another inside the bulb causing this condition.Try replacing both brake light bulbs and inspecting each socket. This is the easiest thing to try before any other diagnostics.

Turn signal bulb fast

Problem is there at the bulb, not the bulb itself, but the seating of the bulb in the light socket. The base of the bulb has two small tangs on it to keep it secure in the socket. You push the bulb in, and then turn it clockwise just a small amount for the tangs to catch in slots. Then the bulb cannot be pulled out of the socket without turning it back counterclockwise just a bit. If the bulb seats but still doesn't make good contact in the socket, the problem is the socket.
The base of the bulb has a button like contact point on it. That button contacts a similar button in the socket base. The buttons are electrical contact points. Your bulb and socket is not keeping the contact points together.

Tail lights/turn signals and driver brake lights work, passenger-side brake light doesn't

Find a multimerter or an ohmmeter and someone to work it and test the socket to see if electricity is getting to the bulb. Someone will need to push on the brake pedal whilst someone else tests it.
Sometimes a wire can break, or sometimes a metal contact inside the socket can go bad, or can bend in such a manner that the bulb no longer contacts it. Also, sometimes new bulbs are defective.
Be blessed.

Why does the brake light sometimes not work

Open it up and you will probably find something loose at the bulb socket, either a wire or the socket itself may be bad. Try holding the bulb in firmly while someone hits the brake a couple times. Maybe you'll see the problem. That brake light is simply spliced into your other rear brake lights. So, unless the splice has worked partially loose, the problem should be at the high mount light there.

Have a 2006 Chevy Silverado. The left brake light keeps shorting out. Turning light OK.

check the contacts in the socket itself, with the newer tail light and brake light bulbs and the thin wire they use for contacts, any dark or slightly burned areas will cause the bulbs to burn out prematurely

Regular lights work but when u press brake only passenger brake light goes on, i changed the brake bulb which was bad but still no brake light when pushing brake on driver side

sounds like you have a short in the drivers side brake light. it may be due to corrosion in the bulb inlet.try cleaning the bulb socket itself with wd40 or add bulb grease to the bulb. you may have a broken wire to it also.check with a test light to confirm you have power to the bulb when brakes applied, this will take 2 people 1 to press brakes and1 to check for current with a test light at the tail light itself. you may only have corrosion in the brake light bulb socket,so,,do this 1st. with lights off,, remove the bulb on driversside, add a little bulb grease to your bulb, insert it into the bulb socket, and then remove the bulb again,do this 3 times, make sure the bulbs getting connection. then apply the brakes and see if the light comes on. thank you for choosing fixya.com

Electrical/Rear Lights

You have a short posiibly in the socket itself because you are forcing your brake light power into your park light. This can also happen if you have a bad or no ground on that socket. If you found this helpful, please post as so. I was a mobile mechanic/electrical and would love to live caht about it

The tail lights are out, so the brake lights-Jeep Grand Cherokee

i have a 2002 jeep grand cherokee i had the same problem when i would apply my brakes when the headlights were on my brake lights would go out, i found that my bulbsocket was not making good contact with the socket housing, if you notice when you take off a bulb, look at the light fixture where you unscrewed your breaklight bulb you will notice 3 medal contacts-they should be silver in the socket housing and like a copper on the socket bulb, in the socket housing their should be 2 silver contacts together and 1 by itself the one that looks by itself is making bad contact with the copper one thats by itself on the bulb, what you can do for a quick fix is; get a small piece of low cage wire or a thin piece of metal like copper stick that in to the bottom or top of that metal contact--i did it through the bottom leave the wire or piece of medal sticking out enough for where it can get contact with the bulb (just a little wire is enough to make contact, now screw the bulb on and test it---it will work----i did it to mine, if you need more assistance let me know lmadrid82@yahoo.com

Left brake light works but the right does not.

reversing the plug connnection is far fetched for the plug would have a guide that will fit into the other socket. If this is not in proper position it wont go in. What type of bulb housing do you have? is it the plastic base type? If it is check and see that the ground connection is not insulated at the terminal. There is a certain plastic coating that develops upon prolonged usage of the lamp assembly itself and is normal, only have to clean out the coated terminal to have a bare metal contact. Did you check the bulb socket of the right brake lamp itself? Heat can cause the terminals plastic surface in the socket to be deformed . Check on this also.
