Question about 2002 Mazda MPV

5 Answers

I TOOK MY 2002 MAZDA MPV TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE FLASHING OVERDRIVE LIGHT AND THE HARDSHIFTING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS FIXED.THE DEALERSHIP DENIED THAT THERE IS WAS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM.THE TCM WAS REFLASHED ONCE IN THE PAST.THE DEALERSHIP TRIYED TO REFLASH THE TCM BUT WHEN THE TECNICIAN GETS 3/4 OF THE WAY,THE DIGNOSTIC COMPUTER INDICATED THAT THE TCM HAS TO BE REPLACED.I WOULD LET THE DEALERSHIP REPLACE THE TCM,BUT THE DEALRSHIP COULD NOT GUARANTEE THAT THE PROBLEM WILL BE SOLVED EVENTHOUGH THE TECNICIAN BELIEVE THAT THE TCM IS THE PROBLEM.IS THERE A WAY THAT I COULD BUY A PREVIOUSLY WORKING USED TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODUAL AND HAVE IT INSTALLED IN MY VAN.AND DO I STILL NEED TO HAVE THE REPLACED TCM REFLASHED.OR IS THERE ANOTHER SOLUTION. THANK YOU

O/D OFF INDICATOR LIGHT FLASHING / MIL WITH DTC P0706
BULLETIN NOTE
This bulletin supersedes the previous bulletins 05-006/03 issued on 12/18/03, and 05-001/05 issued on 01/07/
05. The REPAIR PROCEDURE, PART(S) and WARRANTY INFORMATION have been revised.
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2002 - 2005 MPV vehicles with VINs of JM3LW28**50539650 or lower (produced before Nov. 5, 2004)
DESCRIPTION
On some vehicles, the O/D OFF indicator may be flashing and/or the MIL is ON with DTC P0706 stored.
The Transaxle Range (TR) Switch electrical contact area for the D and 3 ranges may not be large enough. This
may cause the Transaxle Control Module (TCM) to misjudge the position of the gear shift lever, and set the
DTC.
To prevent this concern, the electrical contact area in the Transaxle Range (TR) Switch has been increased to
allow detection of the D range signal in a wider range.
Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Verify customer concern.
2. Replace Transaxle Range (TR) Switch according to the Workshop Manual (Section 05-17 TRANSAXLE
RANGE (TR) SWITCH REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
3. Verify repair.

Hmm seems you have a pickle.. I stopped using mazda since they failed to recall the familia model in my country.. every one had a broken transmission..

ok firstly yes you need to have the tcm reflashed..

ok do this..

  • go to a scrap yard find a vehicle like yours and pull the transmission out
  • replace that one with yours..
  • have a technician (any with a diagnostic tool (code reader will do)
  • clear all error codes and flash TCM
enjoy..

  • Rishi Roshan Ali May 04, 2010

well you could just replace the TCM ,, but the reason why the dealership said it may not fix the issue is cause there might be,, sensors, solenoids or the electrical or belt (yes your transmission has a belt) that may have the issue..
Feel free to try the TCM first..

  • Rishi Roshan Ali May 05, 2010

to replace just disconnect the battery,,,

    install the tcm

    assemble everything back up

press brake pedal for 30 seconds

    replace negative battery pole

    thats it your done...

you will want to consider taking the car to a tech with a code reader to clear and reset the error code..

    other than that noting special..

I tried various places where i know to confirmwhether you can get sn used TCM but i didnot get one. This is a very common problem which you are facing and the fix for it was exactly what the mechanic said. So you can carry on changing the TCM and your problem will be fixed.

You can use another TCM but you will need to reflash the ECM (engine control management) . You are in a difficult position here so be careful before you spend any money. The dealer will not guarantee this because they know if there is further problems it will not be solved by only replacing the TCM and reflashing the ECM. Good luck and think twice before you spend any money.

Was there a problem BEFORE the maintenance or only after?

Car is running in 'limp mode' so it won't drive correctly.

Did you have to pull the dash to get to heater core? IF so, something's still loose back there.

My 1997 Mazda MPV Hold light keeps flashing

There is a speed sensor for the transmission inside the speedometer gauge.
if the speedometer cable is broken the hold light will blink. indicating a trans
malfunction code and the transmission will not work properly.
do not drive too long without a speedometer cable.

Airbag warning lights flashing on dashboard of mazda premacy 52 reg can I reset to clear these lights myself?

there are a quite a few problems associated with the airbag light flashing. The light will flash in long and short frequencies, this is a diagnostic code, e.g. two long flashes followed by six short flashes equals code 26, which is clockspring. Other codes are: 46 and 47 connector under seat, 3 power supply etc.

2002 Mazda MPV Alarm problems

I had the same problem on my moms Mazda MPV. The solution is simple... Go on the passenger side; turn the key clockwise then turn it counter clockwise. That should turn off the alarm. What you can do to get some silence is to just remove the appropriate fuse, you will find the alarm will also be dissabled but the emergency lights will still flash, indicating that you are not out of the woods

My overdrive light is flashing indicating the overdrive is off

this could mean there is a problem with the transmission, but most times when OD light is flashing it is because the wiring to the OD switch is broken.
is the OD switch on the end of the gear shift lever ?
or does your vehicle have the shifter on console between seats ?

Overdrive light flashing

There is an overdrive sensor located inside the transmission, you can goto any local garage and have it replaced fairly cheap or DIY by dropping the transmission pan and the sensor is located in plain sight, also the sensor is around 15-30$ through a parts store.
