Question about 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

2 Answers

Does anyone know what engines and transmissions would interchange with a 1991 olds cutlass ciera with a 3.3 and a four speed auto ? Both are bad in mine but the body is really decent. I don't know what to do.

That is what I was afraid of. I have hung onto this car thinking I could find an engine and trans. I use these cars on a motor route and go through them. I have a 95 olds with a 3.1 in it also that is on it's last legs. Someone gave me a 3.8 engine with trans attached and told me it would work in my 91 olds. I didn't think so because I can see the engine is different and looks like it has a distributor. He couldn't remember what they took it out of or what year it was as it was in storage for a few years. I just didn't know who to ask to be sure what would work and what wouldn't. Now I know. Next time scrap is up, I may have to let the old car go. Thanks.

I would suggest getting rid of it. Just my 2 cents, the 3.3 motors are not reliable this is why GM discontinued them, You will end up spending more on the engine and tranny then the car would be worth outright with everything working properly. I would try and find something else. Otherwise the engine out of a olds intregue or the same car you have.. I do not recal that a 3.1 motor and tranny will work due to the wire harness.

What makes the fuel pump not kick on on a 92 Oldsmobile Cutlass

There is a red wire close to the battery in the front. It's not connected to anything. Apply positive voltage and that will run your pump for testing purposes.

I have a 1991 cutlass ciera. It ran fine and died while driving. The 6 spark plugs, ignition control module, fuel pump and fuel filter have all been replaced and it still will not stay running. Does anyone...

Thinking crank sensor, don't know if it's a 3.1 or not,3.4?Anyway with the engine running CAREFULLY
tap the crank sensor with a dowel or driveway marker, some long stick. If the sensor is bad the engine
will stumble or quit when you tap it,Same test also will check for broken board in the ecm also.

I sincerely apologize for the late response...Due to the bad economic situation this site has had a substantial (+50%) increase in the number of questions being asked in the last four months.

I do not know if you have the 2.5L or the 3.3L, however I have included both below.

For the 2.5L(4-cylinders):
Firing Order:
1-3-4-2
Cylinders:
1-----2------3------4
(Front of Vehicle)
Ignition Connections
___
o-1
o-4

o-3
(Front of Vehicle)

For the 3.3L (6-cylinders):
Firing Order:
1-6-5-4-3-2
Cylinders

1------3------5
(Front of Vehicle)
Ignition Connectors:

Again my apologies...

1989 cutlass ciera transmission seems to be slipping, but one professional I talked to said the problem might be due to a defective speed sensor. Is this possible or likely, and if so where is the speed...

It isn't a speed sensor. In 1989 all GM front drives were hydraulic shift. Do you know if it is a three speed or four speed. The speed sensor in 1989 only controls the speedometer. Also can you describe the problem. Does it just slip? Only certain gears?
