You have a water inlet on the back of the engine right between the heads on the top of the block. The only good way to tell is to remove the upper intake manifold and pressure up the cooling system to 16 pounds if its not visible. To fix it, you would have to remove the upper intake anyway.

I'm leaking coolant near the back of engine and fire wall on the passenger side, Firestone told me I needed a Heater core. Does that sound right?

That is the location if the heater core on most vehicles. A heater core is usually very expensive to replace (part is only 30 to 60 dollars....labor is usually 8 to 10 hours). I would get a second opinion just to be sure. Make sure you keep a close eye on the b coolant level and temperature. It only takes running hot once to damage an engine.

Pictorial of 1997 Volvo 2.4 ( B 5254 T ) engine showing freeze plug locations

There are freeze plugs on the back of the head and the block too. I suggest you replace then all since they have aged the same. Replacing one at a time will only do a patch job and you'll never know when the next freeze plug will start to leak.

Had water pump and thermostat replaced and now i smell coolant thru my air cond, defrost, and heater. since the repair my engine now runs hotter then it did before the repair. the reason for the repair was...

They shop should have replaced the heater core or hoses going to it, or at least told you so you could make the decision When it leaked from the fire wall, this is the first thing I would have gone after. You can bypass the heater core, but winter is coming on. Let me know Randy.

Leaking engine coolant. the coolant eventually all leaks out and car over heats.

Does the leak show up on the ground when you are parked with the engine running or stopped.
Determine where it's leaking from. Hose? near fire wall, near radiator. Water pump will leak when it's worn.
Can you smell it when you're inside the car? heater core.

Coolant leaking by the firewall in the engin compartment

Check in the very back of the cylinder head's by the fire wall, there's a coolant pipe that run's from one head to the other, it's hard to get to but with a mirro you can check it.

Leking water from back ner firewall not heter hose

The AC condensation drain tube is also located on the passenger side fire-wall towards the bottom of the fire-wall, it is there to drain the condensation from the evaporator/core plenum so that it does not flood the passenger compartment floorboard with water and it can easily be viewed from under the vehicle, and if it is cool clear water that is leaking and not hot coolant then you have no problem and that is a normal condition when the AC is operating.

If it was a coolant leak the cooling system would be low on coolant, and the engine would run hot when the coolant gets low.
