SOURCE: 2006 Chevy Cobalt - key

This is a running problem with the cobalt. It happened to me also. Under the steering collum there is a rubber boot. Take that boot off and put your finger straight up into the opening. There will be a small switch that you will have to move to the side to release your key.

SOURCE: Chevy Cobalt: key stuck in ignition

Had this problem with our 2006 Colbalt LS and it is the shifter. Key would not come out. Will have to replace the shifter. That's going to be a bill unless you have a powertrain warranty. Was over $600.-00 at the Chevy dealership we have to use.

SOURCE: my 2005 chevy cobalt factory radio is locked

There are only 2 things you can try to fix this yourself: turn off the engine and open the driver side door (to turn the radio off). Wait 5 minutes, start your car.
If that does not solve it, turn off your engine, disconnect the car battery, wait about 5 minutes. Reconnect the battery (negative pole first - black connector) and try your radio again.

If neither one of these two fix your problem, I am afraid only a GM service center or dealership can fix the problem. The Cobalt is notorious for all kinds of electrical issues.

Thanks for using the fixya forums!

SOURCE: MY CAR IS ON AND WON'T TURN OFF KEY STUCK IN 2009 COBALT

try playing with shifter. move from park to low rapidly and push to park with some force. try this a few times. the shifter sends a signal to a lock actuator to allow your ignition to release key. if that doesnt work remove your steering wheel lower cover. usually acces 2-3 screws from underneath cover. u will see what looks like a gold pushbutton located near lock cylinder u may be able to get key released by manually actuating that solenoid

SOURCE: key stuck in 2009 chevy hhr ignition help please

You may want to try pushing fordward harder into the park position while turning the key to the off position. The locking cable may need adjustment. If this does not work, try turning the collar just behind the keyswitch counter clockwise while trying to remove the key. Thanks, Dana

I have a 2009 Chevy Cobalt LS standard transmission. The key is stuck in the ignition and the only way to cut the car off is to stall the engine by coming off the clutch and taking off the battery cable. ...

Ya, GM has had these problems for a long long time. The good news is that you cant remove the ignition unless the key is in the ON position. (Most of the time, ive never seen a Cobalt) So what ever you do, dont turn it back. I'd say you might have to cut the the key to get the cover off. Either that or the cover. You'll get a new key with the new ignition anyway, the cover id want to keep if i were you. I do know this, after you change the ignition, the car will go into antitheft mode. You can get a cheapo ignition and BYPASS the anti theft security system, (Passlock) or buy Genuine GM parts and have the key programmed to the system again. You're talking a Transponser key and Passlock Antitheft security Ignition. Id go with the bypass as these systems are known to fail anyway. Here is a link on the security system. Hope i helped a little bit, repost this problem and get some more answers. Good luck

We cannot get the key out of the ignition and it is stuck on acc. and has run the battery down. What in the world is going on?

The battery needs a full charged to have the ignition keys pulled out. The other thing to that can cause the Ignition keys not to release.

In the Cobalt the problem is that there is a small bar in the shifter that is supposed to hit a micro switch and that bar can came out of place.
It will not hitting that micro switch to allow the ignition to release the key when the car is in park.
What to do is tear the center council apart and pull the whole shift mechanism out and reposition the bar and put it all back together. Yes it's a pain and time consuming
Good luck and hope this helps, and be careful not to damage the ignition lock, you could damage the wires in the ignition lock for the anti theft.

2005 chevy cobalt key stuck in ingintion, can not get the key out car will not start seems like battery is dead

Place the transmission shifter in neutral and try starting the car. If the car starts that's a good thing. The bad thing, there is a lock pin in the shifter that activates the micro switch to release the ignition key when it's turned to the off position. It's a simple fix, take the center console a part so you can get to the pin to realign it to the micro switch. When you have it apart you'll see what i mean. Once you have it aligned, the key's will release from the ignition switch. Good luck and hope this helps, and take note: make sure you have a set of tools to take the console a part if this happens again when your out of town.
