1991 (4 cylinder) Toyota Camry freeze plug problem

I have a 1991 (4 cylinder) Camry that is leaking from under the engine (passenger side). Took it to mechanic who said it may be freeze plug.
I would like to know what is involved in replacing the frezze plug and what is a normal charge for replacing it?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

The price is determined by how much you have to remove in order to gain access to the freeze plug to replace it the freeze plugs themselves are just a couple of dollars but could be several hundred to replace due to gaining access to replace you also have freeze plugs sometimes that are on back of engine and require you to either remove engine or transmission to replace also keep in mind that normally if a freeze plug is leaking it is due to a neglected cooling system that is now full of rust that may have to be flushed out

What is the cause of coolant leaks behind the engine closer to the firewall?

There are freeze plugs on the back of the engine block and on the cylinder heads. I would suggest you replace ALL of the freeze plugs now instead of having another one leak later on.

How do i know if my heater core is bad

If the heater core is bad you will usually end up with wet carpet in the passenger side floor. Leak could be outside in the engine compartment also. Fill it back up, run it a while sitting in the driveway with the heater on. Check the floor and check for leaks under the vehicle. The other options are bad - cracked cylinder head leaking coolant into the engine, cracked engine block or bad freeze plug on engine.

Freeze plug

The passenger side of the engine is also where the water pump sits.
The freeze plugs would be along the block between the engine and the radiator and between the engine and the firewall.
The water pump would be behind the serpentine belt or the timing cover depending on which engine you have.

Antifreeze leaking from the front of the car , by where the wheels are. Why is this happening?

Had same recent problem. Leaking anti-freeze near passenger-side under engine. Inspect all hose connections and area around water pump and did not find source of leak. Took car to dealer and they checked and told me it was leaking from timing cover gasket and head gasket. I found the head gasket hard to believe so I went to a trusted mechanic and he did a dye test that found the leak was in fact the timing cover gasket.

I have a 2005 toyota camry.Leaking antifreeze on drivers left hand side. Mechanics took apart dash did presure tests etc. and can't find leak? Any suggestions?

The only antifreeze that goes into your car is two hoses (one in, one out of firewall, behind engine) that connect to what looks like a mini radiator. This is called the heater core. Usually this leaks to the passenger side, however it simply has to be your heater core leaking. Tell them to connect those two hoses together instead of running them into fire wall, and if the problem stops, which it will, to replace the heater core. How big is the leak by the way?
