Question about 1989 Jeep Comanche

1 Answer

I have a 1/4 tank of fuel and I run out. the pump was replaced and the indicator light (low fuel) hasn't worked properly since. Is there a special way the sending unit is placed? or did the mechanic install incorrectly. This is a 88 Comanche 4.0

Likely the float arm is out of adjustment on the pump assembly. There isn't any "special" way of installing, it's just a matter of being careful so that the level float arm does not get bent or the actual sending unit on the assembly does not get pushed out of position.

Your main problem is the fuel leveling sensor In the fuel pump it will need replacement. I recommend buying it of ebay, and have a mechanic replace it for you or unless you can do the job. Fuel Tank Sending Unit Level Sensor for Chevy Cavalier Malibu Alero...

Wont stay running while driving

The fuel pumps on the 1999 burbs and rrucks have a tendency to seize when the tank is low on fuel and the outside temperatures are above 90. I fought this for years to find this fact. Add cold fuel to the tank when this happens and see if you have a "sensitive " pump. After replacement with newrer aftermarket pump never had problem again. You will need to drop the fuel tank to change the pump and special tools to release the fuel lines connector. Good luck!

Low gas indicator light does not come on when guage is on E

The fuel pump is kept cool by the fuel in the tank. It is rare for a Toyota fuel pump to fail but if your running it that low on gas your not helping last any longer. I would suggest not letting your tank get below a quarter tank. That way you will never have to worry about whether or not the light will come on. Typical there would be about a gallon or less of fuel in the tank before the light would come on. If it did come on you would have about 20 miles r so of fuel left in the tank.

Denali low fuel indicator

Have a friend lay/sit/crouch by the back of your truck(Where the tank is), and turn the key on. they should hear a "whirring" sound.
If they do, the pump is fine(Check fuel filter). If they hear nothing, replace your fuel pump!

Mercury cougar 2002 run out of gas. then died. put gas in and now wont start. what could it be?

the fuel rail has to be bled out. when you run a fuel injected car out of gas sometimes the fuel rail needs to have the air bled out before it will operate properly.

When my gas light comes on how many miles do i have left before i run compeletly out of gas?

Most vehicle have about 2 gallons of fuel when the light comes on usually around 20-40 miles depending on the vehicle. I would suggest always keeping atleast a minimum of a quarter tank of fuel at all times if possible. Dirt/debris that can accumulate over time in your gas tank will be pumped through your fuel system once it is using the bottom of the barrel reserves this can cause a restricted fuel filter and your injectors to be clogged too.

Does this malibu have an low fuel light to let one know its on empty.

Yes it does have a low fuel indicator light as standard equipment. I would like to caution you on running the car with the fuel level below 1/8 tank, it overheats the tiny electric fuel pump inside the fuel tank and greatly shortens it life span, it is a VERY expensive repair.

Where is the fuel pump on a 1995 eagle talon non turbo

1995-98 Vehicles
See Figures 7, 8, 9 and 10
On these vehicles, is possible to remove the fuel pump and/or gauge assembly by working through the access panel under the rear seat cushion instead of having to lower or remove the fuel tank.
  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure, as outlined earlier in this section, but keep the rear seat cushion off and the connector(s) detached.
  2. If not already done, remove the protector.
  3. Disconnect the fuel pump hoses and connectors, then remove the fuel pump from the vehicle.

To install:
  1. For FWD vehicles, place the fuel pump in the vehicle, aligning the packing positioning projections with the holes in the fuel pump.

0900c152800ad8d2.jpg Fig. 8: When installing the fuel pump, make sure the projections are properly aligned with the holes in the pump assembly
  1. For AWD vehicles, perform the following:
    1. Check to be sure the fuel tank packing is not damaged. If it is, it must be replaced.
    2. Place soapy water on the inside of the packing, then install the fuel pump assembly. Do NOT tilt the assembly during installation.
    3. Apply soapy water to the outside thread of the fuel tank. Use special tool MB994180 or an equivalent spanner wrench to tighten the cap to the specified torque. Make sure that the marks on the fuel tank and pump assembly are aligned.

  2. For AWD vehicles, make sure the packing is installed properly, as shown in the accompanying figure.

0900c152800ad8d3.jpg Fig. 9: On AWD vehicles, you need a spanner wrench to tighten the fuel pump assembly cap

WARNING Make sure the pump assembly does not turn together with the cap when tightening the cap. If the mating marks are not aligned, the position of the flat will not be correct and the fuel gauge indicator light and gauge will not work properly.

0900c152800ad8d4.jpg Fig. 10: The fuel pump packing must be properly installed for sealing purposes
  1. For AWD vehicles, check for leaks as follows:
    1. Apply soapy water to the circumference of the cap.
    2. Choke the vapor hose and main hose, apply and internal pressure of 1.5 psi (10 kPa) or less from the return hose and make sure no bubbles form in the soapy water.

  2. Install the protector and attach the fuel pump electrical connector.
  3. Install the rear seat cushion.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Hope this help (remember comment and rated this).

My car worn't start, it's not cranking. It was running fine but low on gas when I parked it for the night and the next day it wouldn't start. It was very low on gas that night, so we tried putting gas in...

I SUGGEST YOU CHECK THE FUEL PRESSURE, SOUNDS LIKE YOUR FUEL PUMP HAS FAILED OR THE GAS GAUGE IS INCORRECT AND YOU ARE OUT OF GAS, LET ME EXPLAIN ABOUT THE GAS TANK MOUNTER ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP YOUR CAR AND ALL MODERN CARS AND TRUCKS USE, THEY ARE COOLED BY THE FUEL THEY PUMP IN, IF U RUN THE TANK ;LOW ALLOT IT SHORTENS THE LIFE OF THE PUMP BY ALLOT, SO IF YOU REGULARLY RUN BELOW 1/4 TANK OF GAS YOU MOST LIKELY WILL NEED TO PULL THE FUEL TANKS AND REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP MODULE, ALSO REPACE THE FUEL FILTER WHILE U ARE AT IT. THE TYPICAL LIFE SPAN OF THIS PUMP UNDER THE BEST CONDITIONS IS 100,000-125,000 MILES
