Question about 2003 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

1 Answer

Where can I find a place on the web that shows how to replace the timing belt on a 2003 VW TDI with out buying the shop manual? I was told that you have to lift the engine in order to get to it?

There is two ways to change the timing belt.First-only can be done by professional VW mechanic without opening the front of the car.Second-need to remove front bumper, head lights plate, cooling system radiator/not an A/C radiator/ to get access to the timing belt.Hard job If you do not have an experiance.

Im replacing water pump on a 2003 vw jetta gli vr6. I need a polygon socket to remove the water. I looked few places no one had it including the dealership. where can i find it??

The dealer has one (owned by the techs) but they are not going to let you use it. They are not in the tool rent business. Any repair shop that works on VW will have one. If you want one you will have to buy it from a tool dealer, find a Snap-on or MATCO dealer in your area.

I want to buy a 2003 VW Bug TDi and i would like to know the problems they have

Automatics have a higher than usual number of problems. The engine is sound and a great power plant. Electronics come in for a lot of problems in the boost and start systems.

These are usually easy fixes if the shop knows what they are doing.

Much of the tactile coating on the interior plastic fittings wear off and look ugly on black interiors as the white plastic shows through.

Change timing belt every 50,000 miles and again at 100,000 miles along with seals, tensioner and coolant pump.

A broken timing belt will destroy this engine.

5 speeds are very reliable.

Body and paint seem to last well but head lamp bulbs have a short life.

Brake lamp switch should have been updated as well as the Coolant Temp' Sensor. ( CTS.)

2000 VW Jetta 1.8 T Timing belt installation

Look at the diagram in the manual that shows you the parts that the belt goes round. One will be the tension adjuster. Slacken off the adjuster as much as posible then tighten it in position until you have the belt in place and all your timing marks are lined up. Then slowly untighten the adjuster and set the belt tension as per the manual.
