You basically answered your question.

  1. You have a leak and sensor tells you you don't sufficient coolant.
  2. Leaking coolant spilling on hot engine parts converted into steam escaping from engine compartment.
  3. Your engine will start to run hotter without coolant up to it death, that's when it seizes up and shuts down
If you're lucky and had enough time to understand the importance of your warning lights you may only have to replace the leaking part and fill it with coolant and off you go. But if you drove it to it's death you are looking at an engine overhaul (takes longer, sometimes cheaper for parts but not labor) or an engine replacement (expensive, cheaper labor). Over all you'll need an engine to get you going. Lesson "Warning lights" are what they are. I'm not implying you are but that's why they are known as "Idiot Lights".

Your intake manifold may be cracked. It is plastic and is know to cracking. If you take a flash light and look behind the intake, you should see a small puddle of antifreeze or a slight crack. You will need to replace the intake manifold and the gasket, possible do a complete head job on the car since it is already leaking through.

Antifreeze smell from vents

you probably have a leak in your heater core. the white smoke is steam from the hot antifreeze. alhough I am not a mechanic, this a fairly straight foward diagnosis. you need a mechanic soon, before your engine overheats & destroys itself. I hope this is not too late!

My vents are blowing out smoke that smells like anti-freeze when i turn the heat on and the truck temp heats way up to 250 degrees and then drops down to around 220 and then back up and it continues to do...

First, the smoke you see is steam from your heater core leaking. Second, you coolant level is low because the heater core is leaking. To make the car drivable you need to disconnect both heater hoses at the firewall and attach them together using a short pipe (usually 1/2" copper plumbing pipe works well) Then, re-fill any lost antifreeze. Your heat won't work but you wont overheat the engine and destroy it.
On GC's most of the dashboard needs to be removed in order to get the heater core out (expensive and time consuming) so expect the repair to be expensive or if you do it yourself, dedicate an entire weekend to the job. If you've never done one before, don't even think about doing it without a manual.

The car was leaking antifreeze and started smoking in 40 degree weather. I filled it and it stopped leaking, but the engine is still overheating. If its the water pump, how can I replace it on a 1992 chevy...

Is the antifreeze leaking out of a small hole on the water pump housing just behind the pulley?
You need to know exactly where the leak is coming from. If the pump is not leaking then there is another location.
Generally pumps either work or leak. They do not slow down and overheat the engine.
Where did the smoke come from? Under the hood or out the exhaust pipe? If you blew a head gasket and the exhaust was blowing steam that would cause overheating. The original leak under the engine would cause overheating that then will cause other problems like blown head gaskets.
Did you use stop leak or some quick fix? what did you do to stop the original leak?

Yesterday, there was smoking coming from under the hood. There is an atnifreeze leak there but today, it wasnt smoking. Is it safe to be driving?

More than likely the antifreeze was leaking onto the hot exhaust manifold and/or muffler pipe. Since the car isn't hot anymore, its not smoking. Driving is not a big hazzard unless the steam prevents you from seeing or if you run the antifreeze too low, which will overheat your engine. I would fix the leak ASAP...

My car is smoking and a light is flashing that looks like a thermometer

Your car is overheating. turn it off and let it cool down. remove the radiator cap with caution make sure it is cool first. refill your car with antifreeze and check all your belts and hoses. make sure you dont have any leaks from hoses, radiator, water pump, if you dont see any leaks refill with antifreeze then make sure the cooling fan works.
