Question about 2004 Lincoln LS

1 Answer

Random misfire, #4 misfire, and catalytic system below threshold

I purchased an 04 lincoln ls 3 weeks ago and son after driving it i noticed a slight shake with the car at idle. It was worse when in gear and AC on etc. I thought it was the gas maybe so I put premium (93) in it. It still did it. One day I tried to gun it around a car (with a 3.9L V-8) but it was very sluggish and my check engine light came on. I got it diagnosed at Advanced Auto and I got the random misfire, #4 cylinder misfire, and the catalytic system is below threshold (bank 1) codes. Of course this is not covered by the warranty so I have to fix it myself. I am mostly curious about what steps I should take to get it fixed and if one problem can cause the others. I was told a bad o2 sensor can cause the misfires to pop up and also that if i fix the misfires it can cause the P0420 code to go away. Any help is appreciated.

Ok. I am heading to work soon so will check it first thing in the morning and post what I find. Thanks for the reply.

  • Zaraki May 11, 2010

Check the ignition wires (spark plug wires) for a date printed on the wire, if they are stock wires with a 2004 date on them you should replace the ignition wires and if the spark plugs are worn it would be a good time to also replace them as well.

  • knd4bama Jun 01, 2010

I apologize for taking so long to get back on here. Life has been hectic.

I replaced the #4 COP. The tumble at idle has stop but the car is still very sluggish while accelerating. My engine light is still on so I got it diagnosed again. I am still getting all the same codes ( including the #4 COP I just replaced) and am now getting a #3 misfire. I did not notice anything wrong with the old plug from the #4 cylinder ( no oil, water, dirt, etc.) Also the diagnostic said that bank 1 was too rich. I was in a rush and forgot to get the codes written down but I remember that all the codes meant the same and got the #3 misfire as well.

As for the gas, all the stations here carry 93. None have 91.

Thank you again for the help and once again I apologize for the late response.

  • Zaraki Jun 01, 2010

Do you have split-fire or multi-fire spark plugs installed in that engine? If you do they will wreak havoc with the OBD-II system and can cause many different malfunctions with the OBD-II control unit. Also a bad or dirty MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor/ meter can cause mis-fire codes especially on Ford vehicles. Be certain that there are no air or vacuum leaks in the air induction system especially between the throttle body and the MAF (also check the induction boot for cracks between the ribs).

Also; an engine that is sluggish when everything is operating normally would most likely be a plugged up catalytic converter.

  • knd4bama Jun 01, 2010

No split-fire or multi fire plugs. The plug from the #4 cylinder was motorcraft which is what ford uses. I assume that they are the original ones.

The #3 misfire is new. The #4 misfire is old. I replaced the COP and plug on the #4 less than a month ago. Is it likely that something else is causing the misfire or that I got a bad part? As I stated before, the tumble is gone since I replaced the #4 COP so I am wondering if something else is causing them )#3 & #4) to misfire. Also is the "Random" misfire meaning that there is another besides those that are misfireing or is it meaning that there is a misfire?

I looked at what I think is the MAF sensor (between the filter and throttle body. Looks like a long, thin zippo.) and noticed the open slot had some build up but not much. I started the car to see if I could hear a vacuum leak and I could hear a slight "pssshhh" on the right side of the engine. As I moved the hose coming from what I guess is the MAF to a yellow piece of plastic with 2 small reservoirs that connected to another hose, I could hear the psshh subside. My hearing is horrible so I am going to get a friend at work with knowledge of cars to listen to it for me.

I am really hoping the cat is fine. I don't have the money right now to fix even the smallest of issues much less a new cat.

    Thanks again for your responses.

  • Zaraki Jun 01, 2010

Yes, the MAF sensor is used by the OBD-II control unit to determine the amount of fuel delivery to the engine according to the amount of air that the engine is taking into it, and any problem with the MAF will affect the performance of the engine, and I have seen many times before where just a dirty MAF, or a vacuum leak or loose hose clams in the air induction system between the MAF and the throttle body, will throw bogus mis-fire DTC codes (Data Trouble Codes) as well as other lean or rich DTC's especially in Ford products. Also check the air filter side of the MAF to be sure that nothing at all is blocking or restricting the air flow to the sensor, (it does not take much air restriction at all to cause poor performance from the MAF) look up inside the air induction from the air filter side to be certain that no pieces of the air filter or filter housing has broken off and is interfering with the air flow to the MAF sensor. Also, the MAF will develop a very fine dust inside of the sensor that will cause poor performance from the MAF, and you can remove the MAF and clean the dust out of it with carburetor spray or brake clean, (spray through the sensor as the air would flow through it, and be careful with the spray can straw not to damage those little resistor looking things that you should see inside of the MAF sensor air intake opening) and as long as the carburetor cleaner or brake cleaner are in a spray can you can use them, but do not ever submerge the MAF in any type of a cleaning solution or solvent. Here is what the MAF looks like.

  • knd4bama Jun 02, 2010

I cleaned the MAF sensor last night and there is a noticeable difference in acceleration early on but it is still sluggish when accelerating between 30 and 50 mph. Do I need to reset the computer to get it running right? I remember replacing the MAF sensor on my 89 camaro and it running the same until I unplugged the battery. I will look at the MAF from the filter to the engine today to see if there are any leaks. Thanks again.

  • Zaraki Jun 02, 2010

I would suspect either a vacuum leak somewhere in the air induction system between the throttle body and the MAF, or there is the possibility that the fuel filter is just plugged up, do you know when the last time that the fuel filter was chaged?

  • knd4bama Jun 02, 2010

I looked at the air filter to the intake and didn't notice any obstruction. There was some slight buildup around the brass colored disk that opens when you hit the accelerator ( sorry I don't know the name) but nothing major. There is what looks like a small bit of oil in a small corrugated hose coming from the top right side of the engine to the hose between the MAF and the intake. It doesn't seem that there should be any oil getting in there but the way it is set up it seems like there is no choice. The engine side of the hose is open straight to the engine. Also when in park or neutral I can not rev the motor. I can give it gas but it does nothing. Is it supposed to be that way?

  • Zaraki Jun 02, 2010

Actually you should be checking for any obstructions in the air flow between the air filter and the MAF sensor, and be certain that you properly re-install the induction boot and tighten up the hose clamps, and make sure that everything electrical is connected and that the vacuum lines/hoses are all still connected and none are cracked or damaged, and leaks on vacuum lines/hoses are hard to find because they like hide on the underside of the vacuum lines/hoses especially the hard plastic vacuum lines.

  • knd4bama Jun 03, 2010

I will check it better tomorrow. The clamp attaching the filter housing to the induction boot was a bit loose when I removed but I made sure everything was tight and correct. The car still acted the same on the way to work after I reset the computer. It starts off good but the longer it runs the more sluggish it becomes. Also when in park and neutral when I give it gas nothing happens. No movement on the rpm gauge. I thought it strange but figured it was some kind of governor thing. Thanks again.

I had a friend of a friend hook it up to a scope and found out that one cat was completely plugged and the other was going out. I had one replaced since that is all I can afford at the moment. It is running 100% better but still is not 100% I don't feel. MPG went from 10 to 15.5 and climbing ( city ). I am concerned at the effects of having one new cat and the other not so new. It was not bad yet but the clogged one had to play a part in that.

I would like to thank the people that answered my questions and helped me out. What is a good manual for the maintenance that needs to be done on my car?
    Thanks again.

I own a 2004 V8
Have several hundred dollars in manuals

First -If it has a 3.9V8 it has to use 91 and most likely won't run well even on 93.
Second-the code you got is a PO 304,which is a bad COP Coil On Plug on cylinder #4. That is a common Ford failure. DO NOT replace ALL the Coils
Just replace #4 if that is the code. They are $59.00 and tax at auto part store.
I believe you need a 7mm socket and short 7mm wrench. Remove coil cover on top of valve cover, then coil. All same tools.
Third- FORGET the other codes. The LS will set all kinds of codes that will drive you crazy and go away, once you do the bad coil.
Fourth-one problem does not cause another
Fifth-The threshold bank code, is the result of the misfire and how the O2 Sensor sees things, as a result of incorrect fuel mixture (Misfire)
Make sure your O2 Sensors did not loosen up

Now the bad news

Expect-Coil Issues
- Bad Egr Valve
- Bad Trans Solenoid Trans Pack
Change the trans fluid -Mercon V
Flush the P/S Fluid-Mercon
Flush Brake Fluid
Flush Coolant-Yellow GO5
Cabin Filter- Remove round push pins on plastic wiper cover. Filter below on pass side
Gas Filter- Remove left front tire and loosen inner cover, next to door hinge

Use the OEM Spark Plugs
On a V8 -FR5AP-11E The were Motorcraft made by NGK
NGK-6569
Special Plugs.

Unless you have deep pockets-stay away from the dealer.
This is a very complex vehicle
Forget about gunning it. Baby it.

Also-the TPS Sensor will surely fail and the dealer will want to sell you a $600.00 Throttle Body. Stay with me here. Go to auto part store and for $75.00 you get just the sensor (about one inch in dia) and two torx screws and 15 min of your time ,your back on the road.

  • Anonymous Jun 01, 2010

It is possible your have another bad coil. #3 you said came up as a code

You may have a vacuum leak which leans out bank #1,then the O2 Sensor compensates by driving the fuel mixture richer. Don't think the O2 is bad,it is just doing it's job.

I looked back at your first meantion of a PO420. I wouldn't think that a converter was partially plugged,as your veh is only 6 years old, as is mine. But that will cause the sluggish response

  • mwilly523 Aug 27, 2010

hey this is great info. I also have a 2004 LS and engine light came on and midfires just like above. I had #4 and #5 COPs replaced and now it is doing the same. I usually do he work my self but was out of town when and had to get the $4 and #5 done. I also think that I have a vacuum leak but can't seem to locate it. I noticed to seems to get more sluggish on muggy days and on clear days when the air is thinner it seems to run a little better. I checked the 02 sensor and both are a light gray color like I am leaning out. I have codes coming up for convertor but I would think that if it was that the 02 sensors would be black and not gray.

The p0300 code is a random missfire code sometimes caused by bad spark plugs and wires, if you have not done a tune up, it's time for one. now, the p0420 code is for catalyst efficiency below threshold, basically, your catalytic converter is bad and may need to be replaced. Sometimes repairing the random missfire can eventually clear the p0420 code. your car is not burning fuel properly, therefore the catalytic converter is getting dirty. Also, if you notice blue smoke coming out the tail pipe, then that's the cause for a failing catalytic converter as oil is getting to the combustion chamber and being burned off through the exhaust.

The only fault code on 2001 kia sephia is P0422, catylist threshold low.... car ran for 2 weeks fine after new fuel pump, and then just died like first time.... 126 thousnd miles and plenty of fuel, fuel...

P0422 - Catalyst below threshold.

Catalytic converter is clogged or out of medium.

Replace it.

ACTUAL DIAGNOSTIC:

Fault Code Definition
Code P0422 indicates that the Bank 1 Main Catalytic Converter's emissions efficiency has fallen below the minimum allowable limit. This threshold is tracked by a Catalyst Monitoring Oxygen Sensor located on or near the outlet of the Catalytic Converter.

Symptoms

* Check Engine Light will illuminate
* In many cases, no abnormal symptoms may be noticed

Common Problems That Trigger the P0422 Code

* Defective Catalytic Converter
* Engine misfires have damaged the Catalytic Converter
* Internal engine damage resulting in high oil consumption and/or a leaking Head gasket has damaged the Catalytic Converter

Common Misdiagnoses

* Oxygen Sensors are replaced when the real problem is a damaged Catalyst
* Catalyst is replaced when the real problem is internal engine damage, which is producing elevated emissions levels
* Catalyst is replaced when a misfiring engine is the real problem
