Question about 1990 Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

1990 Nisan Maxima threw all 3 serp. belts-crankshaft pulley went bad. Replaced all of these and then it started to rough idle (head gasket leak?) installed stop leak (ceramic) and it starts well one time then the next time it starts rough and can be hard to start. Some say that we haven' driven it enough-scared to drive don't want it to stall.

There is a good possibility that your engine may have ingested some of that antifreeze and if it did thats one of the reasons why your engine idle is rough the reason why its hard to start is becaus the anti freeze is being compressed by the pistons when you start the engine check the tailpipe for white smoke or an antifreeze smell As far as the stop leak its sometimes a temporary fix for a bigger problem .Check your antifreeze level (when it cools down).for a low fluid level

Need serp. belt diagram for a 2000 ford escort zx2 dohc

If your diagram is missing from under the hood, I can give you a few tips that may help get your belt installed. (1) The belt will wrap almost completely around each pulley, no pulley will be wrapped less than 2/3 of the way around. (2) The ribbed side of the belt rides in the grooves of the pulleys, and (3) The flat side or back side of the belt wraps around the smooth pulley or pulleys. Usually at least the belt tensioner pulley is smooth and runs on the backside of the belt. You may want to start at the crankshaft pulley by determining which pulley on either side of the belt will provide the most wrap around the crankshaft pulley.Hope this gets you on the road.

I replaced the water pump and the thermostat because i was having troble with the cooling system anyway i got everthing back together went to crank over the engine to start and the belt came off put the...

No, but the belt may have struck the crankshaft sensor. The sensor is behind the crankshaft pulley. Check the wires going back to the sensor and repair as needed. Let me know if you have more questions.

I have a 2000 pontiac montana and its making a load noise by the belts and its leaking some kind of oil and the water temp is maxed out

its probably the water pump pretty simple to change locate the large smooth pulley on top of the serp belt take out the 4 bolts take off the serp belt remove the smooth pulley the water pump is under the smooth pulley take out the 5 bolts on the water pump and the water pump will come out on the new water pump the gasket will only go on one way make sure you turn it the right way so the holes line up use a little gasket sealer to hold in the right place replace with new pump on the tension pulley there is a 3/8 square hole that you can put a long handled socket or breaker bar in to loosen the tension on the on serp belt so you can streatch the belt back over the pulleys i only wish the thermostat was as easy to change.

Engine rough idles on start up. it also started using some coolant. what do you think the problem is?

Here are some of the reason why engines idle rough or erratically at start up.

1. Vacuum leakage
2. Leaking EGR Valve
3. Spark Plugs or Wires fouled
4. Air Filter clogged
5. Fuel pump not delivering sificient fuel
6. Leaking head gasket this may also be the cause of the coolant usage
7. Timing Belt and/or Pulleys worn
8. Camshaft lobes worn

I hope this help you fix your issue.

COLD START ROUGH IDLE

I hate to be the barer of bad news, but may be the head gasket.

My car started with rough idle. Then very hard to start in cold weather. Next started overheating, but no output from heater. Trickling sound from behind dash board. Overflow bottle overflowing.......

I replaced the water pump, radiator cap, thermostat, coolant, fan belts, power flushed the system. Nothing worked. Some research gave me the answer.

The head gasket leak was allowing exhaust gases to enter the cooling system, displacing the coolant. After use, as engine cools, coolant is sucked back into the system and coolant seeps into the cylinder. This gets worse over time.

First thing you'll notice is the rough idle as the spark plug burns off the coolant in the cylinder. (This is especially true at low temperatures.) If it is the head gasket, the other symptoms will follow as time goes by.

97 maxima rough idling

Check the tension pulley. It has an adjustment on top to set belt tension. On mine the bushing in the pulley went bad and made a rough rubbing sound. I replaced the entire unit as an assembly. Noise went away.
