Question about 2000 Volvo S40
1st thing i need to know are there any transmission electronic fault codes stored in the control modules memory?, this transmission is electronically controlled, shifts are performed by electric solenoid's inside the transmission, these solenoids are controlled by a computer called the TCM, if they (any of the solenoids) fail the trans can loose gears or not shift, this doesn't mean the transmission doesn't have strictly mechanical problems, often depending on the mileage this is the issue with a condition like you have, but the ELECTRONICS as cause of the problem must be eliminated 1st, so please have the fault code test run and let me know the results.
