MPH hour gauge not working. 99 subaru legacy outback

My MPH gauge is not working along with the odometer which is connected to it. It'll work for about 10 min then the mph hand will start waving up and down and the odometer will turn 20 miled into about 1 mile on the odometer. Also im not sure if this is connected or not but when I'm in 5th gear and push on the clutch and brake to slow down the car will usually die. Sometimes also when im downshifting too but not as often. The car is a 99 subaru legacy outback wagon V4 2.2L. thanx

The speedometer/odometer problem sounds like the vehicle speed sensor, which is ususally found on your front wheels, the stalling out sounds like an unrelated problem, but i couldnt tell you where to start for that one

Testimonial: "So since this is a AWD vehicle that means there are 2 vehicle speed sensors right? Any idea on where they would be located and how to change them? thank you for the feedback"

My 05 Focus speedometer is wacky. All other gauges and systems work fine. The speedometer needle doesn't go to zero when vehicle stops moving.

Sounds like the speedometer is faulty. If the speed sensor were the problem, the odometer would not work correctly, the transmission would not shift correctly, and the check engine light would be on.

STALLING AND STARTING PROBLEMS

How do you know that the FUEL PUMP is working? you have one of 3 issues

a. Fuel Filter is Clogged
b. Fuel Pump is not providing enough pressure (40 PSI required)
c. Ignition Module is going bad.

My guess is Fuel Filter or Fuel Pump. Put a Gauge on it and read the pressure... You may find out that you have a pump making noise and not providing enough fuel pressure

1986 Alfa Romeo Spyder. WHen stopped, speedometer shows about 12 mph. At highway speed, it shows about 20 mph. Odomater seems fine.

Phylspilot, my 86 Spider never displayed less than 10 mph. If you look closely, you should see a tiny pin that the needle touches at about 10 mph. That prevents it from ever falling to zero. The needle will not move up until the speed exceeds 10. From my experience, that is normal. In your case, not displaying >20 is NOT normal.

The problem could be a few different things. Since the odometer appears to be working ok (I assume you checked that it racks up the miles at a rate commensurate with your approx speed), the speed needle may be sticking. I had the opposite problem with mine - speed needle okay, and odometer messed up.

I recommend pulling the speedometer housing out of the dash and checking to see if anything is causing the needle to bind. If it isn't, then check the fine spring where the needle is attached to ensure the spring is okay. You should be able to move the needle with your finger smoothly and have it return gently to the start position (in your case 12 mph).

This is a tricky operation. If you remove the needle from the stem, carefully place it back on the stem. Do this without moving the stem. Just reinsert the speed needle on the stem exactly at the small pin that holds the pin at about 10 mph.

Check the entire speedometer housing for cracks. Any crack could be enough to prevent proper operation. (That was the source of my odometer issue.)

Have fun putting it all back together.

My gas gauge works intermittently and speedometer reads 60 mph at idle

I am about to buy an 01 Silverado 1500. The gas gauge wasn't working and the whole odometer display was blank. The dealer checked it out and said it needs a new instrument cluster. You might check into that.

For a 1999 Subaru Legacy does it have just the screw on transmission filter or is there also one in the pan?

I have a 99 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon also. I just changed my fluid & filters. There is a spin-on AND a bolt-in that's inside (you have to drop the pan).

My `1997 Subaru legacy outback wagon ,my gas mileage went from 21 MPH to 15 MPH. What do you think is wrong.

if there are no major problems present all it needs is a tune up(spark plugs, fule filter, oil change, air filter, fule injector cleaner). for a upgrade in fuel economy add a short ram intake, parts are fairly easy to install.

I would really have that exhaust checked again, as well as have mechanic put fuel pressure gauge on & drive it up to that speed and see what happens fuel pressure wise. With exhaust, it's not only cat converter that could be causing reduced flow.
