I bought this tool to remove the filter housing on my 2009 Toyota Highlander 4-cyl. The filter housing seems to be made out of some composite material and I did not want to grab it with the pliers-type oil filter wrench. K-D Tools 3253 end cap wrench fit the housing perfectly and made the removal and the installation of the filter housing easy.
no you don't have to remove the oil filter housing. Mercedes Benz has a tool that fits right over the oil filter cap that is inexpensive or you can just use a oil filter wrench. On the in-line 6 cylinder motor its a little harder to fit a filter wrench back there so a claw type filter wrench might be easier to use.The Mercedes filter tool can be found online also.
Scion XD's are of a choice few that uses a Drop in filter as opposed to screw on types.
The filter housing is on the passenger
side of the oil pan. The filter housing unscrews counter clockwise.
Just put an oil pan underneath to catch the little bit of oil that leaks
out. Pull the filter element out of the cartridge housing. Put the new
filter element into the housing, remove the old O-ring on the filter
housing, replace the O-ring on the filter element housing that is
provided with the "new" filter element. It's always a good idea to
lightly coat that new O-ring with motor oil before putting it on the
housing, providing a better seal. Then with the new O-ring and filter
element installed in the filter housing, just screw it on clockwise. It's really
not much different than the old style screw-on type filters. The only
place, so far, that sells the Xd element that I am aware of is Toyota.
They are about $6 a piece. On a difficulty scale of 1 -10, I would
declare this a (1.5). (1) being a regular screw-on type filter, and
(1.5) for the cartridge type filter on the Xd.
2008 Scion xD oil filter is a cartridge (element only) type. It is located under a heavy, black plastic cap right next to the oil drain plug. To remove the cap, you will need a Toyota "Special Service Tool" or an Assenmacher Specialty Tools "TOY640" or similar cap wrench. Toyota is the only source for the oil filter element; make sure you get a new o-ring (should be in the box with the filter element) and a new drain plug gasket.
I'm not sure why everybody is going to the oil filter canister system. Doesn't make my job at work easier.
You'll need this tool here: TOY640 http://www.toolrage.com/prodview.asp?sku=ASM-TOY640
Any other tool will crack the cap and make life go bad after that.
I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine oil, oil filter, and air filter changes, tire rotation, brake and strut inspection, and maybe a cabin air filter change. Look in your owner's manual near the back - each service should be spelled out in there so you don't go in unprepared.
