Question about 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

I think that I need to adjust the shift linkage on the automatic transaxle, but I'm worried that I will end up mis-adjusting it. Is the adjustment as easy as my Hayne's implies?

Yes, it's rather easy, usually involves loosening a nut and sliding the adjuster. It shouldn't be too hard to get to it. Usually it's on top of the transmission.

Need help Adjusting automatic shifting cables on 2010 cobalt ls


Put the Trans in park then adjust the cable so the shifter is in park. Then shift to nuetral and make sure the Trans is also in nuetral. Adjust as necessary. Using park and nuetral as alignment points should result in the shift linkage being in the correct position for all gears.

The gear shifter on my 1998 Pontiac SE coupe will not unlock so I can take the car out of park


Do you have column or floor shifter ?
All automatic transaxle models use an electric park lock system. Within the housing assembly, a lock cylinder is connected to an actuator which rotates and engages on the electric park lock solenoid. When the floor-shift lever is not in the park position, the actuator disengages from the electric park lock solenoid slider. This allows the lock cylinder to move to the lock position. With the shift lever in PARK and the lock cylinder in LOCK, the actuator cam is positioned against the electric park lock solenoid slider. This prevents the shift lever from shifting out of the PARK position.
The column-shift automatic transaxle model uses a flexible cable actuator instead of an electric park lock system. One end of the cable is attached to the gate assembly. The other end of the cable is attached to the column mounted housing assembly. This system functions similarly to the floor-shift ignition lock system.
The manual transaxle model uses a push button lock cylinder. A clutch start switch is used. The clutch pedal must be pressed before the engine will crank. Refer to Park Lock System Check .

My 93 dodge Dakota runs up to 4000 rpms before it shifts but it still idles really high after that. its a v6 3.9L automatic. I think its the shift linkage but I don't know how to adjust it. ive...


If it goes into gear correctly it's not the linkage. I.e drive reverse etc. I would suspect a pressure issue in the trans for the high shift rpm. Possibly low pump pressure or a valve body issue. The high idle could be a result of this or possibly a sticking cable if it has cruise. Possible vacuum issue also.

Automatic or manual?
If automatic, the problem can be caused by several things and electronic diagnosis may be required. Often , the gear selector switch/connection is faulty. Of it could be caused by the solenoid valve pack in the transmission.

If a manual, gear selector linkage mis-adjusted, OR defective gear set kicking it out of gear.

Shifter feels loose. hard to get reverse, whats the cause?


Possibly the following: Cable needs adjustment, linkage worn or needs lubricant, internal damage. I would start by removing the console panel from inside the vehicle and the boot from the shifter. Try lubricating what you can see from the top side. Don't use WD 40 use a grease that is similar to the type used to stop brake squeal. Work the shifter through all gears with the engine off and see if it eases the situation. If it does not, you'll need to raise the front of the vehicle in order to check/adjust the clutch cable and/or linkage that attaches to side of transmission. Another possibility is low transaxle oil. This should be easy to check as most cars now have a fill hole and a drain hole. Remove the top "screw" (this is usually done with a 3/8 " drive ratchet with NO socket on the end). Stick your finger in and the oil should be even with the top of the hole but not leaking out. If yours has a dipstick, all the better. Unless you are experincing chatter, or any grinding while shifting, it is very likely an external issue with linkage/clutch cable as it attaches to linkage, needing adjustment or lubrication. Check your owner's manual for the correct transaxle oil and freuqency of changing it. Regardless of any other rrelated issues, this is a very important maintenance procedure most people overlook. Your 99 is getting "up there" and it is imperative to follow schedules on oil changes, PCV valve, etc, ec, etc. I am hoping a few adjustments and some lube will fix you right up! If you do raise the car, manually and visually inspect all external parts of the shift linkage, fasteners and bushings and the cable itself for any rust or fraying.....

Shift Controls, Automatic Transmission The transmission shift control linkage or cable transfers the transmission operating mode from the selector lever to the transmission. The indicated transmission position on the steering column is transferred to a shift lever on the bottom of the steering column. On vehicles equipped with cable-operated shift systems, the indicated position of the transmission selector lever is transferred to the transmission through the shift cane, then to the cable, and down to the transmission manual shift lever at the transmission. On vehicles equipped with shift rod assemblies, the rod transfers the indicated transmission selector level position through a bell crank assembly to a control rod. The control rod transfers the indicated position to the transmission assembly.

Automatic Transmission Manual Linkage Adjustments
  1. With the engine stopped and the parking brake applied, place the transmission selector lever at the steering column in the D (DRIVE position) for C6 applications and in the (D) (OVERDRIVE position) for AOD and E4OD applications, and hold against the D or (D) stop by applying a three-pound force to the selector lever knob.
  1. Loosen the shift rod adjusting nut at point A. Refer to the following illustrations.
  1. Shift the manual lever at the transmission into the (D) (overdrive) position for E4OD, by moving the lever all the way rearward, then forward two detents.
  1. With the selector lever and transmission manual lever in the(D) position, tighten the nut at point A to 17-24 Nm (12-18 ft-lb) torque. Use care to prevent motion between the stud and rod.
  1. Remove the three-pound force from the steering column selector lever knob.
  1. Operate the shift lever in all positions to make certain that the manual lever at the transmission is in full detent in all gear ranges. Re-adjust the linkage if required.
  1. On F-Super Duty Chassis Cab and Motorhome and Commercial Chassis recheck for correct operation of the automatic transmission selector indicator (PRN(D)21). Automatic Transmission Shift Cable Adjustment
  1. From inside the vehicle, place the column shift select lever in the DRIVE position (C6) of the OVERDRIVE (AOD and E4OD). Hang a three-pound weight on the selector lever.
  1. Raise vehicle on a hoist.
  1. Remove the shift cable from the transmission lever ball stud.
  1. Pull down the lock tab on the shift cable body.
  1. Position the transmission shift lever in the DRIVE position (C6) or the OVERDRIVE position (AOD and E4OD). This is three detents from the front-most lever position with the first position counting as one.
  1. Connect the cable end fitting to the transmission lever ball stud.
  1. Push up on the lock tab to lock the cable in the correctly adjusted position.
  1. Lower vehicle down from hoist and remove the three-pound weight from the column shift select lever.
  1. After making the adjustment, check for park engagement. Check the transmission control lever in all detent positions with the engine running to make sure correct detent/transmission actions. Readjust if necessary.

REMOVAL
1. Remove air cleaner and air intake hose assembly.
2. Remove center dash trim panel.
3. Remove center console cup holder assembly.
4. Remove floor console assembly.
5. Remove console side panels.
6. Remove Transmission Control Module ftMJ bracket.
1. Remove TCM.
8. Remove shifter cable from transaxle operating lever by removing nut and clip.
9. Remove shifter cable from shifter lever assembly by removing clip.
10. Remove shifter cable from shifter lever mechanism.
11. Remove cable from firewall grommet by removing grommet assembly nuts.
12. Remove gearshift cable from vehicle.
ADJUSTMENT
Lift and rotate the gearshift hand lever into the park (F9 gate position and remove the ignition
key. This confirms the shift lever is in the gated park (F9 position.
After confirming the park gate position. turn the ignition switch . If the starter will operate. the
park gate position is correct. Move the shift lever into the neutral (NJ position. If the starter
will operate in this position, the linkage is properly adjusted. If the starter fails to operate in
either position, linkage adjustment is required.
1. Park the vehicle on level ground and set the parking brake.
2. Place the gearshift lever in park (F9 gate position and remove key.
3. Loosen the cable adjustment screw at the transaxle operating lever.
4. Pull the transaxle operating lever fully forward to the park detent position.
5. Release the park brake, then rock the vehicle to assure it is in park lock. Reset the park
brake.
6. Tighten the cable adjustment screw to 8 Nm (10 inch Ibs.J. Gearshift cable should now be
properly adjusted.
1. Check adjustment by usinq the precedinq procedure.

Transmission range sensor and neutral safety switch are the same thing (when you go to buy the part). It's at the top of your transmission. You'll see the shifting cable connected to it. Here are the instructions for adjustment:
Shift Control Linkage
The transmission shift linkage adjustments must be performed in the order in which they appear.

Column Shift

Place transaxle range selector lever in (D) (OVERDRIVE) position or D (DRIVE) position on vehicles equipped with a transmission control switch (TCS). A weight of 1.4 kg (3 lb) should be hung on the transaxle range selector lever to ensure the lever is located firmly on the (D) (OVERDRIVE) or D (DRIVE) position on vehicles equipped with a transmission control switch (TCS) detent.

Loosen manual control lever-to-control cable retaining nut.

Move transaxle manual control lever to OVERDRIVE position or D (DRIVE) position on vehicles equipped with a transmission control switch (TCS), second detent from most rearward position.

Tighten retaining nut to 17-23 Nm (13-17 lb-ft). Check operation of transaxle in each transmission range position. Make sure that park mechanism and transmission range (TR) sensor are functioning properly.

Floor Shift

Position transaxle range selector lever in DRIVE position against rearward stop. The floor transaxle range selector lever must be held in the rearward position using a constant force of 1.4 kg (3 lb) while linkage is being adjusted.

Loosen manual control lever-to-control cable retaining nut.

Move transaxle manual control lever to DRIVE position, second detent from most rearward position.

Tighten retaining nut to 17-23 Nm (13-17 lb-ft).

Check operation of transaxle in each transmission range position. Make sure that park mechanism and transmission range (TR) sensor are functioning properly.



To take it off, it's a couple of retaining bolts and a wiring harness.
