2001 Ford Focus ZX3 LIGHTS DON'T WORK!

I have a 2001 Ford Focus ZX3 and it runs great, but i have a problem with the lights. the headlights, brakelights, and turn signals work when used, but when i turn on the running lights, they do not come on, nor do the tail lights or license plate lights on the hatchback. Also the dashboard lights do not come on. Any suggestions?

My mistake, the car does NOT have DRL. But when I turn the switch to activate the parking lights, nothing comes on, and when I switch to turn on the low beams, the low beams turn on but still no parking lights, tail lights, license plate light, or dashboard lights

it is an automatic transmission, and yes the flashers work when used for turn signals and hazard lights, but do not stay solid parking lights.

  • brownmatt93 May 04, 2010

I looked at the fuses and as far as I could tell they were not blown... and the gauge lights do not work, along with the lights on the stereo andgear shift letters(if there are lights on those), but the indicator lights work and the backlight to the odometer screen and stereo screen work, and that's it.

  • brownmatt93 May 04, 2010

it does gave a dimmer switch, but it doesn't change anything, and the headlight swtich; when I turn it to the parking lights, nothing happens, not even the fog lights come on, but when I switch it the low beams, the low beams come on(and the fog lights), but nothing else

  • brownmatt93 May 04, 2010

I have used it once or twice, but with some instruction I can probably figure it out.

  • brownmatt93 May 05, 2010

How do I replace the switch?
and would I need to replace anything else, llike wires or a wire harness?

The first thing to do is check your fuses located underneath the drivers side steering wheel. Pull each fuse out and test it with a tester light (test light available at your local auto parts store) Flip the fuse box lid cover over and locate the taillight, headlights, and instrument cluster light fuses (should be three separate fuses) Pull them out and see if they are blown or burned out using the test light. Replace them with the same number fuse. For the dashboard lights, make sure the dimmer is turned all the way up to high. Next thing to do is check and change the headlight and taillight bulbs, pull them out "one by one" and see if they are burned or blown out. Replace with the same bulb (look at part number printed on the bulb)

Go to your local junkyard and find a Ford Focus, remove the dimmer switch and then install it into your vehicle. You will save money vs. buying a new one from the auto parts store. Another thing to look at is a relay under the hood that controls the lighting in your vehicle. Replace that relay and you should have all your lights working again

I would check for a fuse, this is the most likely problem, now if the fuse is good, replace the headlight switch, this is the source for the running lights, and tail lights, and instrument lights,I look for the headlight switch to be bad.

It seems your DRL relay is malfunctioning.

Here is the schematic...

Then the multifunction is to blame.

    The only repair is replacement.

Let me see if a standard diagram is available.... do you have an automatic or standard transmission Zx3?

  • blueextc3221

Clicking on the image will enlarge it.

    Are the flashers operational?

  • blueextc3221
    blueextc3221 May 04, 2010

That narrows it down, then, to the multifunction switch.

    Thanks for using FixYa!!

First - out of curiosity.... make SURE the parking lamp fuse is ok.

Its F47 - a 7.5a Amber fuse according to the last diagram.

If they work with flashers and turn signals - chances are good this fuse may be blown.

It's so difficult with the way FixYa works now to keep the comments straight. I cannot read the comments from earlier on my reply screen. I noticed that you indicated the dashlights stop working as well??

This is indicative of a bad BCM if all these failures are happening. Is it just the cluster lamps.... or the entire dashboard is black?

    Thanks!

Does your year foxus have an adjustable dimmer for the dash?

if so... play with it a bit... along with the headlight switch.... to see if you can get the lights to react.

  • blueextc3221
    blueextc3221 May 04, 2010

ok... i think the key here is that the license plate lamps don't come on.

The only feed for these lamps comes through the Lights switch on the dash.

    Off, Park, and low switch.

I've had a look at all the diagrams, and based on your descriptions.... it seems that switch has failed.

how knowledgeable are you with using a multimeter?

  • blueextc3221
    blueextc3221 May 05, 2010

The switch should be held in with a few quick clips - it is just bressure fit - and pops out/unplugs.

No rewiring necessary.... but once you have the switch out, you can probe the wires when it is on parking lamps - to verify the presence (or absence) of 12vDC.

I have a 2001 Focus Zx3. The dashlights, parking

Sounds like a short circuit here ? You will need to locate the short circuit . Most probable is the tail lamps and their connections , then number plate lights , then any hinged wiring going from body to a door or trunk (ie No plate illum lights) area . Sometimes the dash dimmer can be a problem . Good luck

there are more wires that you cannot see that are melted that is causing the problem. trace all of your wires, starting with the license plate light, all the way to the headlights
