How to use the 4x4 in the snow on a ford explorer

If you have just snow and no tarmac then you can afford to lock the diff, engage 4x4 and keep the speed down!, if you have intermittent tarmac and snow dont lock the diff, but it all depends on how fast you can safely travel and how much slip on the road you expect

Hi my I own a 2002 ford explorer that have a humming noise from the back axle. Also I have a rattling in my engine any help

for the humming check the rear tires for uneven wear. if the are choppy that will couse a humming noise. next check the axle seals, if they leak the rear diff will run low on fluid and cause the bearings to make noise. if the seals are leaking the rear diff will have to come out and be inspectec for internal damge, last possability is the rear wheel bearings they can be checked by raising the vehicle and moving the tire in and out to see if there is slack if there is movement from in and out they will need replacement, the have to be pressed in so you might want a shop to do that repair

What is a good synthetic diff fluid for 98 explorer 4X4 and a 98 ranger2X4? and what quantity should I purchase for each I am replacing both covers?

RedLine makes very good differential fluids. The fluid in the rear differential is going to be 75w140 and as far as the front differential,I would check with the parts store for that.It could be 75w90 or 75w140. You should get about 2 quarts of fluid for each differential. The transfer case is going to use Mercon V(5).About 2 quarts for that as well.

you must remove brakes, then remove axle nut, then remove upper control arm and finally tie rod stabilizer, remove axle from car then bearing can be accessed. this is a difficult job that requires special tools so be careful

Rear Diffrantial Leak 98' Ford Explorer

It should be that easy if the leak is from the gasket. If it from the seal, you will have to remove the drive shaft from the differential and remove the seal and put in a new one. Either way, the repair is fairly easy.
