Question about 2000 Daewoo Lanos

Timing belt tensioner loosening all the way for the belt to go on. Is there a tool that could help me cause a screwdriver is what i'm using to release the tensioner.

Most tensioners have a spot on the pulley to the tensioner where you can hook up a breaker bar to move the tensioner so you can slip a belt on.

I usually just grab a crow bar, put a rag over the end and pry it open to get the belt on.

Instructions
    • Disconnect the negative cable on the battery. Set it aside. Do not allow it to touch metal. Loosen the tension on the accessory drive belts by moving the tensioner away from the belt or by loosening the bolt in the slider bar to relieve tension on the belts. Remove the belts.
    • 1. Unbolt the air compressor, but do not remove the lines. Move the air compressor out of the way. Remove the air compressor mounting bracket and the belt tensioner with the appropriate socket. Place a drain pan under the power steering hoses, where they are attached to the power steering pump. Unscrew the hoses and move them out of the way. Remove the power steering pump and the belt tensioner for the power steering pump.
    • 3. Raise the Stealth with the floor jack. Support the car with jack stands. Remove the right front wheel using the lug wrench. Remove the right front inner fender panel using the appropriate socket. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt, and pull the pulley off.
    • 4. Support the engine with the floor jack. Raise the engine slightly. Remove the right engine mount and mount bracket using the appropriate socket. Remove the three timing belt covers using the appropriate sockets.
    • 5. Remove the spark plug wire from the No. 1 cylinder (first cylinder on the driver's side). Remove the spark plug from the engine. Stick the long screwdriver into the spark plug hole. Turn the engine over by turning the crankshaft clockwise, keeping your hand on the screwdriver. When the screwdriver comes up and stops moving, check the timing mark on the crankshaft. If the mark does not line up at the 1 o'clock position, turn the engine over again until you feel the screwdriver go all the way down and come up again. The timing marks should line up.
    • 6. Check the timing marks on the camshaft. The left camshaft (as you are looking down at the engine) timing mark is at the 1 o'clock position. The right camshaft timing mark is at the 11 o'clock position. The marks should be lined up. If not, repeat the process to find top dead center (Step 5).
    • 7. Loosen the tensioner bolt and push the tensioner away from the belt. Tighten the bolt enough to hold the tensioner out of the way. Remove the belt guide and the timing belt. Check that all three timing marks are still lined up.
    • 8. Install the timing belt, working in a counterclockwise rotation, starting at the crankshaft. Work your way up over the right camshaft (looking down at the engine) sprocket, under the water pump pulley, over the left camshaft, then behind the tensioner. Keep the belt taut between the crankshaft and the right camshaft sprocket.
    • 9. Loosen the tensioner bolt, allowing the tensioner to put tension on the timing belt. Turn the crankshaft twice, lining up the timing marks again. If the marks do not line up, repeat the installation process.
    • 10. Tighten the tensioner bolt to 18 foot-pounds of torque. Install the tension gauge halfway between the crankshaft sprocket and the right camshaft sprocket. If the gauge does not read between 46.3 and 68.3 foot-pounds of torque, repeat the tensioning process (Steps 9 and 10). Install the rest of the parts in reverse order of removal. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 110 foot-pounds of torque.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the accessory drive belts,
    crankshaft pulley and the timing belt cover(s).
  2. Temporarily reinstall the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn the crankshaft to
    TDC of No. 1 piston. The mark on the camshaft sprocket should be aligned with
    the mark on the inner timing belt cover or the edge of the cylinder head.
  3. With the distributor cap removed, the rotor should be pointing toward the
    No. 1 mark on the rim of the distributor housing. On 8 valve engines, the notch
    on the crankshaft pulley should align with the dot on the intermediate shaft
    sprocket.
  4. Loosen the locknut on the tensioner pulley and turn the tensioner
    counterclockwise to relieve the tension on the timing belt.
  5. Slide the timing belt from the sprockets.
    To install:

  6. Check the alignment of the timing marks. On 16 valve engines, the mark on
    the tooth should align with the mark on the rear belt cover.
  7. Install the new timing belt and tension the belt so it can be twisted 90°at
    the middle of it's longest section, between the camshaft and intermediate
    sprockets.
  8. Recheck the alignment of the timing marks and, if correct, turn the engine 2
    full revolutions to return to TDC of No. 1 piston. Recheck belt tension and
    timing marks. Readjust as required. Torque the tensioner nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45
    Nm).
  9. Install the belt cover and accessory drive belts.
  10. If the belt is too tight, there will be a growling noise that rises and
    falls with engine speed.


Diesel Engines

Some special tools are required. A flat bar, VW tool no. 2065A, is used to
secure the camshaft in position. A pin, VW tool no. 2064, is used to fix the
pump position while the timing belt is removed. The camshaft and pump work
against spring pressure and will move out of position when the timing belt is
removed. It is not difficult to find substitutes but do not remove the timing
belt without these tools.
NOTE: Do not turn the engine or camshaft with the timing belt
removed. The pistons will contact the valves and cause internal engine damage.



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the accessory drive belts,
    crankshaft pulley and the timing belt cover(s). Remove the camshaft cover and
    rubber plug at the back end of the camshaft.
  2. Temporarily reinstall the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn the crankshaft to
    TDC of No. 1 piston. The mark on the camshaft sprocket should be aligned with
    the mark on the inner timing belt cover or the edge of the cylinder head.
  3. With the engine at TDC, insert the bar into the slot at the back of the
    camshaft. The bar rests on the cylinder head to will hold the camshaft in
    position.
  4. Insert the pin into the injection pump drive sprocket to hold the pump in
    position.
  5. Loosen the locknut on the tensioner pulley and turn the tensioner
    counterclockwise to relieve the tension on the timing belt. Slide the timing
    belt from the sprockets.
    To install:

  6. Install the new timing belt and adjust the tension so the belt can be
    twisted 45 degrees at a point between the camshaft and pump sprockets. Torque
    the tensioner nut to 33 ft. (45 Nm).
  7. Remove the holding tools.
  8. Turn the engine 2 full revolutions to return to TDC of No. 1 piston. Recheck
    belt tension and timing mark alignment, readjust as required.
  9. Install the belt cover and accessory drive belts.
  10. If the belt is too tight, there will be a growling noise that rises and
    falls with engine speed.

Replacing a timing belt on a 1994 Ford Ranger


Instructions Things You'll Need:
  • Drain pan
  • Ratchet
  • Ratchet extension
  • Socket set
  • Small standard screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Timing belt tensioner wrench No. T74P-6254-A
  • Large standard screwdriver
  • Torque wrench
  • Timing belt
  • Timing belt cover gasket
    Preparation
  1. Place a drain pan under the radiator and drain the coolant from the radiator.

  2. Squeeze the spring clamp holding the upper radiator hose to the radiator fitting with a pair of rib joint pliers and slide the clamp towards the engine.

  3. Twist and pull the upper radiator hose off the radiator.

  4. Remove the fan blade using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

  5. Rotate the belt tensioner pulley using a breaker bar and remove the drive belt.

  6. Detach the water pump pulley using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

  7. Pry off the access plug from the upper part of the timing belt cover using a small standard screwdriver.

  8. Set the transmission to Neutral and apply the Parking brakes.

  9. Rotate the crankshaft pulley with a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket to align the "O" mark on the crankshaft pulley and the "O" mark on the belt cover.

  10. Look through the cover access hole. If you see another timing mark on the camshaft sprocket aligned with the mark on the inner belt cover, cylinder number 1 is at Top Dead Center (TDC). If not, rotate the crankshaft one complete turn again and check for the alignment marks.

  11. Removing the Timing Belt
  12. Unscrew the four mounting bolts and the Phillips screw next to the access plug from the timing belt cover using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket and Phillips screwdriver.

  13. Detach the crankshaft pulley using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket and remove the belt guide (large washer) from behind the crankshaft pulley. You may need a pulley remover to take the crankshaft pulley off. If so, you can rent one from most auto parts stores.

  14. Loosen the adjusting bolt on the tensioner pulley assembly using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

  15. Rotate the tension spring rollpin (this is the screw next to the adjuster bolt on the tensioner pulley assembly) away from the timing belt using timing belt tensioner wrench number T74P-6254-A. As you hold the timing belt loose, tighten the assembly adjuster bolt to lock the tensioner using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. Now remove the tensioner wrench.

  16. Remove the timing belt.

  17. Installing the New Timing Belt
  18. Install the new timing belt starting at the crankshaft sprocket. Route the belt in a counterclockwise direction over the auxiliary and camshaft sprockets. Properly engage the belt lugs on the sprockets' teeth and keep any slack on the belt to the right side, between the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. Make sure not to rotate any of the sprockets as you install the timing belt.

  19. Loosen the adjuster bolt on the tensioner pulley assembly so the tensioner rolls against the belt. If necessary, push the tensioner pulley against the belt with a large standard screwdriver to remove any remaining slack on the belt.

  20. Make sure the transmission is in the Neutral position and the Parking brakes are engaged.

  21. Rotate the crankshaft two complete revolutions so that cylinder No.1 is back in TDC. This will help to tighten the timing belt on the sprockets.

  22. Tighten the adjuster bolt on the tensioner pulley assembly between 14- and 21-foot lbs. (19.0 to 29.0 Nm) using a torque wrench.

  23. Tighten the tension-spring bolt between 28- and 40-foot lbs. (38.0-54.0 Nm) using the torque wrench.

  24. Install the belt guide (large washer) and the crankshaft pulley. Tighten the pulley bolt with the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

  25. Install the timing belt cover with a new gasket using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket and Phillips screwdriver.

  26. Reinstall the water pump pulley, drive belt, fan blade and upper radiator hose.

  27. Refill the cooling system with coolant.

The 2.0L engine is an interference motor. Extending the replacement interval could lead to the belt breaking and severe and costly engine damage. Care must be taken if rotating the crankshaft or camshafts with the belt off, if resistance is felt, do not force them to turn.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the timing belt covers as outlined in this Section.
  3. Remove the valve cover.
  4. Place Camshaft Alignment Timing Tool T94P-6256-CH or equivalent, into the slots of both camshafts at the rear of the cylinder head to lock the camshafts into position. NOTE: If the special tool is unavailable, a suitable length and width straight edge can be used to align the camshafts.
  5. Loosen the camshaft timing belt tensioner pulley retaining bolt and move the tensioner pulley to relieve the tension on the timing belt.
  6. Temporarily tighten the tensioner in this position. NOTE: If the timing belt is to be reused, mark the belt for the direction of rotation before removing to prevent premature wear or failure.
  7. Remove the timing belt.
  8. If required, remove the sprockets as follows:
    1. Hold the camshaft with an appropriate camshaft sprocket holding tool.
    2. Loosen and remove the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt.
    3. Remove the sprocket from the camshaft.
    4. Repeat the procedure for the 2nd camshaft sprocket.
    5. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
  9. Slide the crankshaft sprocket onto the crankshaft aligning the key-way.
  10. Align the camshafts using the Camshaft Alignment Timing Tool T94P-6256-CH. NOTE: If the special tool is unavailable, a suitable length and width straight edge can be used to align the camshafts.
  11. Reinstall the sprockets onto the camshafts and loosely install the camshaft retaining bolts.
  12. Tighten the camshaft sprocket retaining bolts to 47–53 ft. lbs. (64–72 Nm) .
  13. Loosely install the crankshaft pulley to verify that the engine is at TDC. Realign the marks if they have moved.
  14. Verify that the camshafts are aligned. NOTE: It is recommended to purchase a tensioner spring and retaining bolt through the dealer parts to apply the proper tension for used or new belt installations. The spring is bolted to the tensioner assembly and becomes a part of the engine. Ignore this notice if the tensioner spring is already installed.
  15. Reinstall the retaining bolt (W700001-S309) into the hole provided in the cylinder block and place the tensioner spring (6L277) between the bolt and the camshaft timing belt tensioner pulley.
  16. Tighten the retainer bolt to 71–97 inch lbs. (8–11 Nm) .
  17. Remove the crankshaft pulley and install the timing belt onto the crankshaft sprocket, then onto the camshaft sprockets working in a counterclockwise direction.
  18. Tighten the camshaft sprocket retaining bolts to 47–53 ft. lbs. (64–72 Nm) .
  19. Be sure that the span of the camshaft timing belt between the crankshaft sprocket and the exhaust camshaft sprocket is not loose.
  20. Be sure that the camshaft timing belt is securely aligned on all sprockets.
  21. Reinstall the lower timing belt cover and tighten the retaining bolts to 53–71 inch lbs. (6–8 Nm) .
  22. Apply silicone sealer to the key-way of the crankshaft pulley and install. Tighten the retaining bolt to 81–89 ft. lbs. (110–120 Nm) .
  23. Inspect the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley to verify that the engine is still at TDC.
  24. Loosen the camshaft timing belt tensioner pulley retaining bolt and allow the tensioner spring attached to the pulley to draw the tensioner pulley against the camshaft timing belt.
  25. Remove the camshaft alignment timing tool from the camshafts at the rear of the engine.
  26. Turn the crankshaft two revolutions in a clockwise direction.
  27. Tighten the camshaft timing belt tensioner pulley retaining bolt to 26–30 ft. lbs. (35–40 Nm) .
  28. Recheck that the crankshaft timing mark is at TDC for the No. 1 piston, and that both camshafts are in alignment using the camshaft alignment timing tool. NOTE: A slight adjustment of the camshafts to allow the insertion of the camshaft alignment timing tool is permissible as long as the crankshaft stays at the TDC location.
  29. An appropriate camshaft sprocket holding tool can be used to move the camshaft sprocket (s) if a slight adjustment is required.
  30. If a camshaft is not properly aligned, perform the following procedure:
    1. Loosen the retaining bolt securing the sprocket to the camshaft while holding the camshaft sprocket from turning with the sprocket holding tool.
    2. Turn the camshaft until the camshaft alignment timing tool can be installed.
    3. Verify that the crankshaft timing mark is at TDC for the No. 1 cylinder.
    4. While holding the camshaft sprocket with the camshaft sprocket holding tool, tighten the retaining bolt to 47–53 ft. lbs. (64–72 Nm) .
    5. Remove the tool and rotate the crankshaft two revolutions (clockwise) .
    6. Verify that the camshafts are aligned and that the crankshaft is at TDC for the No. 1 cylinder.
  31. Install the valve cover.
  32. Install the timing belt covers.

How to replace water pump on 2000 volkswagon beetle with1.8 liter turbo engine?


The following steps need to be taken to remove the pump.

1. Remove the ribbed belt. Compress the tensioner and remove the belt. Remove the ribbed belt tensioner.

2. Remove the upper timing belt cover.

3. Align your timing belt marks. The following pictures are for the cam timing mark, the flywheel timing mark for an automatic, flywheel timing for a manual and the marks on the harmonic balancer.

4. loosen the timing belt. There is a 13mm head nut that keeps the tensioner in place. Loosen this nut and turn the tensioner clockwise to get come slack in the belt. You are going to need a tool to get tension back on the belt. I use the tool pictured (picture of how to tension the belt) but know of people using snap ring pliers to rotate the tensioner.

5. Slip the timing belt off of the cam drive sprocket and off of the water pump.

6. Remove the water pump retaining bolts pictured and remove the water pump. The pump can often be stuck in place. A screwdriver carefully used can help in getting the pump

7. Moisten the o-ring with coolant before installing the new pump. Install the new pump.

8. Install the belt and tension as shown in the picture attached above. Turn the engine over by hand through a full revolution of the cam gear. Re-check the timing marks. The marks will often be off, don't be discouraged by this, it happens to everyone. If the marks are off loosen the belt and slip it the amount of teeth needed to align the marks.

9. Install the items taken off during the removal of the pump, fill the system with coolant and start the engine. The system will pretty much bleed itself out as it reaches operating temperature.

How do you loosen the ps/ac belt to replace it?


Your serpentine belt is under pressure from a tensioner It can be overpowered with a straight tool that won't bend e.g. FLAT screwdriver. Be SURE not to cut or damage the belt. reverse proceedure to replace the belt. The tensioner has about 15 lbs of tension. In other words it is stiff, but not immovable.

Or use a long sturdy flatheat screwdriver to pry it out to loosen the tension. Tighten it, then slip off the belt.
