The brake light switch does not need the ignition "On" to work. The switch is located in the pedal box above the brake pedal (two wired switch) under the dashboard. It may need adjustment .Good luck

How do I turn the red lights at the rear of the car off? All normal lights are off.

The brake switch is on the brake pedal arm and it controls the brake lights. It has to be in a position where it will be pressed when you press the brake pedal.
Hope this helps.

Brake lights remain on after car is turned off

Sorry, but I may have gave you the wrong info. Thinking that the brake light stayed on in the IP. At the rear, then replace the brake switch. It is shorted. It is located on a bracket by the brake pedal arm. Under the dash. The brake switch touches the arm and is spring loaded.

Brake lights stay on whether the ignition is on or off

Hi Friend:

Your Brake Light Switch is Faulty or Damaged, You'll locate your Brake Light switch under the Drivers side dash,Attached to your Brake Pedal arm.

Its not an expensive Part Probally not over $10.00,

It has a couple wires running to it and is normally mounted on a small bracket, and has a nuts or a Clip holding it on to the Brake pedal arm.

This should get your Brake Lights out when your not pushing the brake pedal, While your under Dash ALSO make sure the Brake pedal return spring is Attached to the Brake pedal arm and is Pulling the brake pedal UP when its released.

Please let me know how my Solution helped you,By Voting on the Solutions i've given you.

It sounds like your brake pedal switch is not working right. Are the lights on all the time, or just when you turn ignition off? If the former, it is bad brake switch. If the latter, you likely have a bad ground located somewhere in the wiring harness.

Most vehicles have the switch located on a small plate next to the brake pedal arm. Follow the pedal up the arm and to the firewall. Along the way you should see a plunger style switch that looks like the one that you bought. It might also be found inside or next to the brake booster under the hood.

1985 Nissan Maxima. Brake lights remain on at all times.

Follow brake pedal arm up under dash, it should be there and arm pushes against it when pedal released. Not too bad to do, just getting there is the fun part.

THE PROBLEM COULD BE THE COMBINATION SWITCH.

Tail light stays on (brake)

If brake lights remain on then inspect brake light switch. Brake light switch is located on top of brake pedal arm bracket. It is either out of adjustment or faulty.
