When you start up your car look at the exhaust..if you see a large amount of steam coming out and water puddles thats your leak..either a cracked head or leaky head gasket. you can confirm this a couple of ways..let car cool down, top off coolant, just add some water, now start the engine with the radiator cap off...once it starts to warm up, if you start seeing a lot of bubbles coming up and the coolant starts to overflow out of the filler neck then you know. Another sure fire way to check is to go to a shop and have them do a "block check" this consist of a blue dye which a sample of your coolant will be sucked into the solution and if it turns yellow, then it detected exhaust gases in your coolant. You"ll know for sure this way...but water coming out of the exhaust is a pretty good sign also.
Highlight the link below, copy and paste into your browser, and it'll explain about how to fix a leaking head gasket if you dont have a $1000 in your pocket to fix this properly. BUT,you have to do exactly as instructions state or it wont work! and i'm only recommending this because of the year car and estimating how many miles you might have on it..its probably not worth fixing. its better to just try Blue devil and see if you can get another 6 months to a year out of it, because this will give you time to save more money to buy another car. Im trying it right now, in an old 89 Chevy berreta with 297000 miles... blown head gasket and i didnt follow directions and it only lasted 10 miles, so i had half a bottle left (because you only pour in the recommend amount for your size engine,) and i did it again and now the water levels arent dropping and the oil level is finally going down now..now i have to change the oil because its been contaminated with water and bearings dont like water as a lubricant.
check this link out if you want more info on this. This product doesnt not contain solids so it should be safe only pour in the recommend amount.

Get a pressure test done ,or buy the part yourself, and do it yourself,or go to a service shop you trust.#2 crank your engine, let it run ,go back by the exhaust,do you smell any smell like maple syrup? anti freeze has a sweet smell when it burns,do not smell to much of it, it can make you sick. ??? head gasket ?

I would check the radiator cap, thermostat or you may have a blown head gasket. Are the cooling fans coming on? You could have a bad fan switch.

Honda civic

check if you have a viscous fan hub as from what you describe it appears that it has failed and is not driving the fan when idling. If you have an electric fan then it is not working properly if at all.

Honda civic 2002 overheating

Had the same problem with two cars I had. First was fixed with a radiator flush and refill, second was fixed with a new water pump and belt. I would also look at the radiator and see if there is a lot of bugs and other gunk on it. That can cause the heat not to dissipate without the speed of driving pushing air over it. Pressure washer or coin-op car wash wash high pressure sprayer can clean that off.

Any time there is a back fire issue I check the timing. This is the most likely cause of the problem.

1994 Honda Civic LX\overheating within 2 mile drive

Remove and raise upper hose at thermostat end and remove lower rad hose.
Fill rad with a hose and watch for flow from bottom rad hose and/ or bottom rad hose connecton.......water should fall though rad easily.
Honda rads are cheap.....any restriction....replace rad.

Remove thermostat....fill thermostat housing with hose and watch for water flow at bottom rad hose.
Flush good.

Remove heater hoses.......flush back and forth until a good flow is present "With heater control set to hot" if no or poor flow....replace heater core.

Stop leak can plug everything.

Also.......not likely causing over heating....but ....at your mileage,if you do not know if the timing belt has been changed.....CHANGE IT NOW!
Water pump is optional at this mileage.

How to change water pump on a honda civic year 1999 lx

These water pumps are integral with the timing belt you must replace the timing belt with the water pump because the leaking water pump and antifreeze on the timing belt causes deterioration of rubber belt thereby causing imminent failure of timing belt destroying valves $$$ google" interference engine" for an explanation of interference engine
