Question about 1999 Acura CL
The "pd" after the code means that the code is pending. Meaning that the ECM recognized a problem but is identifying it is inactive. You can gather that the problem is intermittent.
P0401 means: Exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficient. This code has something to do with the EGR system. The EGR valve may be defective of something else within the system is restricted or is clogged and thinks that there is a restriction. Without a scan-tool you will be limited to what you can do or test but you can remove the EGR valve and inspect it for carbon buildup. But you may also want to inspect the vacuum lines and MAP sensor too. Faults in those areas can affect the performance of the EGR system. So be thorough.

I had same code. Took Intake Manifold off and cleaned out the too-small carbon-pluged EGR port using small drill bit. Now engine runs fine and no code showing up after reset. This happens alot with this engine.
