Question about Buick Century

2 Answers

Where do I start I bought 1990 Buick Century Custom its a V6 and it had been sitting for about 5 months. The car ran great the first day we had it then we were traveling and had been driving about 110 miles and stop to get some food turned the car off for only a few minutes. The car started fine but when we went to pull out and gave it gas it acted like it was going to stall out so we pulled over. Then the car would roll over but wouldn't start. It acted like it wasn't getting enough gas. So I replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs, throttle sensor, ignition module and it will start but only idle for a few minutes and then stalls out and also stalls if given gas. I am now told that it could be a sensor. I released the fuel line from the mainfold and gas gushed out so i know there is pressure and gas getting to the engine, but I am unsure why it won't stay running? What sensor or cause could most likely cause the car to bog out when given gas? please give me anything and everything that could be wrong? I have already spent more money than i can afford and Autozone just keeps selling me $50-$100 parts and I cant even get the car anywhere to have it tested and i cant afford to have it towed. I can fix it myself I just need to know what the problem is so I can fix it.

I stated that I already fixed the throttle sensor I bought it brand new and already put it on the car so it has to be something else. Could it also be an O2 sensor. Also attempted to check the spark plug wires and they intermitatedly

Thank you for your time. I really think after what I have done so far that is a sensor or something minor with the air flow because once it starts and u give it gas it runs but when u let off the gas it just dies I think it is something with air flow. Its getting gas and when it idles it idles well also.

To avoid replacing unnecessary parts, buy a chilton or haynes manual and a digital multi-meter. Follow the component tests outlined in the book and see what you find. Two items I'd check first is the MAP sensor and the vacuum hose that goes to it (check all vacuum hoses as any broken, detached or cracked lines can cause other items not to work) and the throttle position sensor. both influence how much fuel and timing the engine gets while running. Another item to check is the mass air flow sensor that is located in the air tunnel between the filter and the engine. There are two wires that run across the inside that can be gently cleaned with carb cleaner and a Q tip. That sensor tells the
engine how much air is going into it and the engine then changes the fuel supply to match that.
All sensors are important and if the ones I mentioned are OK then go ahead and check the remainder. Make sure the air cleaner is clean as well....I just saw a Jeep that would not start....under the air filter there was a huge rodent nest that stopped pretty much all air flow going into the engine! (everything should be that easy...it had three good techs scratching their heads though!)

The car stalls when you give it gas because the mixture becomes too lean.
Most likely this is a problem with the throttle sensors (most likely the closed throttle sensor) - check them using a voltmeter.

Before you go any further, have the battery checked. If there is an internal problem, it will create all kinds of problems like this.

1990 Buick Century Custom 4-Dr Sedan 3300 V6. New motor, fuel pump, fuel filter, alternator and starter. Turns over, though it won't fire.

Check your fuel pressure at the schraeder valve that is on the fuel rail. If you have fuel pressure, check for spark. If no spark, then ignition diagnosis is needed. If no fuel pressure, check for diconnected, or pinched wires, as this can easily happen during an engine swap.

I have a 1990 Buick century, that will not start, i have changed the ignition module, fuel regulator, plugs and wires, fuel filter. When changed the fuel regulator it started and ran great, shut it off and...

Sounds like your fuel pump is weak so i would check the fuel pressure first. The fuel pressure should be 40-47 psi with key on and engine off and 31-44 psi with engine running. If its not within these specs then replace the fuel pump.

Check a few things, check your spark plugs, spark plug wires, also check your fuel filter, fuel pump, but the first thing that you should check is the ground wire from your battery to the engine block

New pump still no fuel

Its not unheard of for a pump to go bad that soon, can you hear it run when you turn the ignition to on position, if not chk. fuse and relay and all electrical connections and grounds, If it does run get a fuel pressure guage and chk. the pressure.

Need to check for fault codes. Possibly a faulty sensor causing the fuel system to run rich or lean.
