Question about 1993 Ford Explorer Limited

2 Answers

The check engine light came on so i plugged in a code reader and got code 173 and 177. So i replaced the two o2 sensors. After doing that the vehicle developed a high idle of around 1300 and now the engine light comes on and off. So i disconnected the battery for minute. Once reconnected i started the vehicle and it idled normal, rechecked for any codes and it's still throwing 173 and 177, any ideas?

i'll try that but, it doesn't act like a vacuum leak! I've dealt with vacuum leaks before, but thank you! The 173 and 177 refer to HEGO sensor fault, running rich.

Since you replaced these sensors, have you reset the car's memory using a diagnostic tool ? Disconnecting the battery does not always reset the ECM(engine control management).

To reset you will need a diagnostic tool. You can buy a cable connection called ELM327 which is available for around 25-35 usd off ebay. It normally comes with the required software. I forgot to mention that it works for obd2 and I do not know what system you are using. If your vehicle is pre 1997 then it uses obd1 which is a different cable to obd2. I hope that this helps. If you need the software then do let me know.

Try looking for loose or damaged vacuum lines to start with. With the engine running, wiggle all vacuum lines and listen for a hiss. It could be intake gaskets too. Try dumping some soapy water on the intake gaskets when it's running and see if it bubbles profusely.

How to reset check engine light?

First replace the bank 2 sensor 1 O2 sensor. p0051 is that sensor heater circuit. These codes are always the O2 sensor, unless you see the wires are melted against the exhaust manifold. Once replaced the light will eventually go out. A code reader or scanner will turn it off.

Engine Code O2 Sensor Circuit, HV Bank 1, Sensor 2

You did not say what your car was ,however most newer cars use 2 oxygen sensors per bank, if it is a 4 cyl replace downstream o2 sensor,if 6 or 8 cyl bank 1 sensor 2 is downstream sensor on bank that has cyl 1 on it.upstream sensor is in front of catalytic converter downstream is after the cat

Gas mileage is terrible, check engine light on,put on computer by friend said o2 sensor -i wasnt sure my friend new what he was doing so took to auto zone now they say the computer wont read

auto zone reader will sometimes not read codes. take it to your local garage and ask them to plug into it with an updated reader. i dont charge to read a code and i would hope they dont either. the o2 sensor could cause bad gas mileage. whens the last tune up done? check air filter. plugs? also check air in tires. low tires can cost fuel mileage as well. hope this helps

06 pt crusier replaced both o2 sensor and still getting p0171 could it be issue with after market o2 sensor both are bosh

the fact that you replaced the sensor and the same code is there means the sensor is functioning ok, you have another problem, code readers just tell you what caused the mil light to go on, not the problem, for that you have to scan the engine on a reader and get readings from sensors and actuators, it could be a plug, vacuum leak egr malfunction, injector malfunctioon to name a few, do yourself a favor and get the engine analysed

P0303 Error code on reader. Changed all spark

Most likely it is a faulty O2 Sensor that needs to be replaced. It would be best if you took the vehicle to one of the Auto Parts stores that will read the codes for free so you can pick up the part and any special tools needed to replace it. The O2 Sensor requires a special socket to replace it.

I just get a 2000 lanos but the check engine ligth is ON when i put it the code reader says to me 2 codes : 1st code is P0137 and p1336 say a lot lf items but got to be only one of those , whath can be???...

Essentially the same as P0136, P0137 refers to the second oxygen sensor on Bank 1. P0137 means the O2 oxygen sensor's voltage remained low for longer than 2 minutes. This, is interpreted by the ECM as a low voltage condition and sets the MIL. Bank 1 Sensor 2 is located to the rear of the catalytic converter and should produce an output signal relative to oxygen storage capacity of the catalytic converter. This rear (sensor 2) sensor is less active than the signal produced by the front sensor. However, if the ECM senses the sensor is inactive, this code will set.

Symptoms There may be no visible symptoms to the driver, other than the MIL (Check Engine / Service Engine Soon) illumination.

Causes
A code P0137 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Faulty O2 sensor Exhaust leak near the rear sensor
  • Plugged catalyst
  • Short to voltage on O2 signal circuit
  • High resistance or open on O2 signal circuit

  • Possible Solutions
  • Replace faulty sensor
  • Repair exhaust leak near the rear sensor
  • Check for restriction in catalyst and replace as necessary
  • Repair short, open, or high resistance on o2 signal circuit
The other code is your crankshaft position sensor. You need to replace both of the sensors and the check engine light will go off.

Service engine light keeps coming on. have had O2 sensors replaced. still the light comes on...any suggestions what to do?

There are about 100 causes for the service engine light to come on.
Buy an engine code reader and you'll be able to always identify the source of the fault.
This one is less than $50. Plugs in under dash -driver side. Pays for itself in one incident.
