Question about 2001 Toyota Camry

Automatic transmission didn't shift, so took off the small cover next to the shifter, was able to shift. Now the engine won't start. Why?

Your shift lock wont disengage if you do nto have brake lights and try putting the shifter into N to try and start the engine most likely cause for no brake lights is going to be blown STOP fuse

Automatic shift stuck nissan frontier


Shift cable broken or binding.
Have a trusted person try to shift it while you look at the linkage on the side of the transmission.
make sure engine is off, key on, parking brake set and all wheels are blocked in front and back (so you don't get run over)
Look for the small movement at the shifter linkage while the helper is trying to shift.
Many times, it's a small clip or mounting (cable to shift linkage) that has broken, gone missing, or twisted up.
Only do this on a flat surface with vehicle blocked in place.

My 2008 Chevy impala will not come out of park


The
shifter needs to be inspected. Its quite possible that The
shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.








There
are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and
suddenly this shifting problem occurred then its shifter
assembly alignment issue.

Shift - interlock system problem .
Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of PARK position. The system consists of the following components:
• The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
• The automatic transmission park lock solenoid
• The automatic transmission shift lock control switch
• The transmission range switch
With the ignition in the ON position, battery voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The transmission range switch provides a path to ground for the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid in the PARK position. With the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid energized the shift lever is mechanically locked in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, de-energizing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position. When the shift lever is out of the PARK position the controlled ground contacts in the transmission range switch open. This prevents the automatic transmission shift lock solenoid from energizing when the vehicle is out of the PARK position.

Put a new engine in a 1998 isuzu rodeo now it won't start. I thought it was the neutral safety switch because the R was on the dash and it was in park


This could be the problem. If your dash indicator is showing reverse but the transmission is in park it could be the safety switch. I'm not talking about the safety switch in the transmission though. In automatics they put a second switch to kill the starter from engaging. You need to adjust the linkage. If your shifter isn't actually on the column but the indicators are there is a cable that attaches the floor shift to the column and that is adjustable. Put the Floor shifter in Park and turn the column section nearest the dash by hand until you find park. Then adjust the cable length as needed. If all you have is the column shift it is still a cable adjustment. Set the emergency brake, drop the shifter to low 1 and adjust the cable linkage by loosening it on the transmission and manually move it all the way to low 1 then tighten it down then move the shifter to park and repeat teh adjustment process to verify that it is properly aligned. Lock the linkage back down and see if the vehicle will start, if it doesn't move the shifter to neutral and try to start the vehicle if the vehicle starts then check the column shift safety switch at the park position to make sure it is still in place and working. Typically, if the vehicle won't start in Park or Neutral it is more likely to be the Transmission neutral safety switch.

1991 Honda Civic DX Why am I able to push the car with automatic transmission while it's in park? The car won't start and run, either.


If the car rolls with the shifter in the park position and the starter will not engage the engine than the transmission is not in park. This could be caused by a bad shift cable. In order to confirm this you will need to find the area where the shift cable attaches to the transmission. While a helper runs the shifter through the gears check the linkage at the transmission to see if it is moving. If the linkage is not moving that there is a problem with the shift cable or the shifter. Some disassembly of the center council may be necessary to gain access to the area where the shift cable attaches to the shifter to see if it is still attached to the shifter. If it is and the shifter is moving the cable than the cable will need to be replaced. If the cable is moving the linkage at the trans than there is probably something wrong internally inside of the transmission. My 1997 Chevy Cavalier gear shifter is really stiff going into each gear, why?


If it's an automatic transmission....
Try a SMALL amount of light oil on the transmission shift selector on the transmission. (follow the cable in the engine compartment down to the transmission) If its covered in mud and dirt, clean it off with water. Also try oiling the same cable internally.

Gear shifter is broken


When you say it is broken do you mean it won't move into certain gears?

In past couple days our '04 Echo shifting lever won't go into Park or 2 or Lo gear. And we couldn't take the key out of the ignition. My husband took to center console cover off and when he loosened the bolt under the lever we were able to get it into park and get the key out. But still cannot get into the lower gears. Will probably be taking it to a transmission shop before making major decision.

If your's is an automatic trans, and it is locked in park, there is a small opening on the right/front side of the shifter, pop the top and press the white button, it releases the lever.

How do you remove shifter being stuck at park for a 1990 toyota camry?


For the short term and as a temporary measure, the shift lever can be released by depressing shift lock override button which is in a small hole next to the shifter, typically covered with a small piece of plastic.

A permanent fix is needed though. The transmission shifter has a safety interlock. You must depress the brake to release the interlock in-order to shift into a drive or reverse gear. This system is powered by electricity. The fuse may be blown. Check the fuses for faults. The brake pedal / brake light circuit must be functioning in order to put the car in gear. Check the blue 10amp brake light fuse. Make sure the wiring in the trunk does not have breaks that may cause the fuse to blow
