How do I figure out what type of refrigerant I need for the ac?

The car originally had R12. If it has not been converted to R134 you would need to have it serviced by a pro or have someone convert it to R134. The R134 fill kit will not fit the R12 fittings.

Most everything built before 1994 used R12 freon. And you must have a license to buy R12 in most countries.
A shop can convert the system over to R134.

What type of refrigerant does a 1990 Ford Ranger use?

there are only two types of refrigerant (or normally called as freon): R12 and R134. R12 is designed for car model 2000 and below. though, some old car compressors can accomodate R134 provided that you change your auxillary fan (fan for your aircon condenser) since R134 is hotter than R12. Ask an aircon technician if your compressor can be charged with R134.

Most of the countries now ban the use of R12 since it is more harmful to our ozone.

look at the connection fitting as this was the change over period from R12 to R134 the latter of which will work of sorts but as well on the earlier system but R12 is now prohibited from sale as too polutant

What type of refrigerant for a/c

It came from the factory with R12 but look and see if it has already been converted to R134. If not then convert it over the R134 as R12 is very expensive. If it is low then you have a leak that must be repaired before adding refrigerant. It is illegal to add refrigerant to a leaking system.

I am looking at buying a 1993 sierra 2500 and the a/c doesn't work. i am wondering what kind of a/c is in there and what options i have for fixing it. i don't know when R12 ended and when R134 started.

It would have R134 in it. You'd need to see if there is freon in it, if it's low, or if it's all leaked out. You may need new O rings, new lines, new condenser, or a new compressor. Could run anywhere from a couple hundred dollars, upward to $1000.

Use r13 in 1992 ford thunderbird

the only way to check that is to look under the hood, and look for your AC. there will be a little sticker that will say "R13a" if you can. i believe that ford didnt start using it until 95 though

What year did they stop using freon in suburbans ac's

Never stopped. R-12was banned and replaced with R134-A - R12 can be purchased by an EPA certified service tech, but not by the general public because of recovery requirements.
