Question about 2002 Nissan Altima

02 altima 145,000 miles, original owner. serviced

02 altima 145,000 miles, original owner. serviced regularly (like clock work) misfires at 74 mph then 'service engine soon' light comes on. battery terminal connector changed, different gas used w/less than 2 gal in tank, new spark plugs. ran great for 2 days then 74 mph reached, misfires and service light back on...any suggestions (other than to drive at 73 mph!)

Do you know which code is being stored after the service light comes on? Also which engine is in it?

Do you have a code from the check engine light? Your local auto parts store should be able to loan you a code reader/scanner tool either free or on the cheap. From your description I'm willing to bet it is an issue with either your fuel delivery or your coil pack. (either an injector is fouled, or one of your coils is on the fritz) There are a host of other possibilities, however that's where I would start. some things to consider: When was the last time, or have you ever replaced the mass airflow sensor? (They do weird things to many cars when they fail) Is it completely missing? (no spark) Are you accelerating when it happens? (fuel/air) Does it continue missing afterwards? (fuel/air/spark) if you are going 68 +- at the top of a hill, spike the pedal and then let the engine decelerate, does it still misfire @ 74? (problem with ECU "governor")

You said the check engine light comes on. What code number are you getting?

2001 Dodge Stratus R/T 3.0L V6. Motor ticks on top end while running. Every couple minutes the ticking goes away and then comes back. Timing belt is original, vehicle has 145,000 miles

A ticking noise at the top of the engine suggest either sticking/worn valve lifters or wear on camshaft lobes.

An oil change won't cure any mechanical wear, but it certainly won't do any harm either..

You can also try adding an additive to the oil. There are additives for 'quietening valve train noise'. The alternative is to remove the camshaft and lifters for inspection/replacement as necessary.

With 145, 000 miles on the clock your engine has done well - but no engine doesn't wear or suffer from the occasional fault. Maintenance such as frequent oil changes negates many problems, but wear and faults do develop.

You have the original rubberised camshaft/timing belt on a 2001 car with 145,000 on the clock? You're living on borrowed time. If that belt snaps your car is history. Scrap value. Change it...

2004 ford mustang jerks when accelerating at 45 mph

Stay out of the Genie in a bottle isle

There has never been a manufactures factory service
manual or owners manual that require ANY additives to
any vehicle system

There not necessary & DO NOT WORK

The car is over 10 years old

Have the spark plugs been changed every 3 years
Have you replaced ALL the ignition coils around 6 to 8 year
or when they have misfired or failed
The front Oxygen Sensor get replaced on ALL vehicles at 100,000
miles
Have you been on a road test with a professional scan tool to look at data, have to do that a couple times a year
Is the EGR System working
Do you have any Vacuum leaks

Could go on all night

Just have to work on it several times a year

Have you checked for codes not just Generic
but Enhanced?

Not really a problem - I bought the 2000 Altima with 145,000 miles. Running great. But, are there any maintenance logs with the various servicing schedules/components/time intervals available for that...

You create your own with all your vehicles

Treat them all the same & keep a log book

You should be doing a lot more than anything
out there especially MFG Scheduled Maint
Follow that alone you will break down

Most services don't include a fuel filter. check to see if it was replaced. If not replace it. These clog up, you get sufficient pressure but not flow

My 2001 Kia Sportage w/145,000 and has a annoying tapping sound

When the engine warms up it should be fine.
Check that you are using the proper oil. Also check if there is a winter oil recommended. Sometimes winter oil is a bit lighter weight and can help keep the ticking noise down or gone all together.
