When you start to overheat on this model,it will run rough and die. autoone will run a scan on your vehicle for free.it akes about 5 minutes, but will tell you what is wrong, and what part you need.

but 210 is relatively high temp.....so iwould replace that thermostat for about 5 bucks, along with the temp sensor for about 30 bucks. all in all takes about 10 mins to replace them both yourself.
i say these to things as i have a 98 grand cherokee limited 4x4,and had the exact same problem.

Shutting down when hot can be associated with a failing fuel pump but the pump is not influenced by engine temp.
Items that are influenced are the crank position sensor, cam sensor and the ignition coil. I have also heard of shutdown relay problems associated with engine (under-hood) temps but haven't ever seen that happen.(same for the actual board in the computer)
To find the problem, you need to do tests when the engine has shut down as anything tested with the engine running will often test OK. If either the coil or asd relay prove to be the culprit, the best cure is to re-locate them to a cooler location or to make a heat sink to draw some heat away from them.
To do testing, get yourself a chilton or haynes manual and a digital multi-meter and follow test directions.
I'd need to do that testing if I were there, as that not only is the best way do get an accurate diagnosis, it is the only way.

Yes, try a 180 thermostat, with a 195 the fans will not turn on until about 210.

My 96 jeep grand cherokee keeps dieing when it gets hot

My first question would be, do you know if the cooling fan is coming on ? ?
The computer can shut down the engine if it reaches 250 or 260 degrees. You could also have a coil or other electrical part that is failing when hot.

What would make my jeep quit running and start back later

a fuel pump can cause this as when it gets hot it may shut down and restart when it cools off.the other thing it could be something(ignition module)that when it gets hot shuts down until cooled off.

Have a 99 jeep grand cherokee 4.7. it runs ok for 5mins when cold then once it warms up it seems like it is running out of gas, then shuts off and won't start until cool again. Also has small tap or knock...

this happened to me, it ended up being a bad coil mine had the independent coils (one for each spark plug) and it was causing a misfire which caused an audible ticking as well. i bought one and just kept moving it to the next until i found the one that needed to be changed its a electronic device and thats why it fails when it gets hot.

1994 Grand Cherokee, 5.2 V8 shuts off when hot. Cool for an hour or 2, starts up ok for a half hour or so, then dies again. No trouble codes except 12 and 55; I pulled fuses to check them, hence the code...

Your engine computer is bad. It's a good thing that you mentioned about the check engine light dying also, as this is a classic sign of a bad ecm. I have repaired more than one of these Jeep computers, replacing the three power capacitors located inside the computer, and they have worked for years afterwards. If you don't have the skills or knowledge to repair the ecm, get yourself a rebuilt ecm unit and swap it out.

Jeep grand cherokee 97 shutting off while driving

It may not be the same problem But, My Jeep would quit until it cooled down and then I could start it and it would run again. Did this on and off for weeks. Turned out that it was the sending unit in the fuel tank. Cold fuel, no problem. warm fuel it would shut off. Cost me $500. Hope this helps, Good Luck

1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport bogs down

I just posted a simular resonse in another post. What is sounds like it that the fuel pump is starting to go bad. When it heats up after use the pressure drops not pusing the full amount of fuel. Whenits cold it works fine until it heats back up 10-20 mins. remember fuel in the tank helps cool the pump so keep it soewhat full but sounds like the damage is done. your probally gonna have to replace it.

I'd suggest the ignition control module, however I'd have a certified mechanic check it out just in case...
